A batch of character banners for director Ruben Fleischer’s (Zombieland) upcoming crime drama Gangster Squad has been released.  The movie is set in 1940s Los Angeles and stars Sean Penn as real-life gangster Mickey Cohen, who became the target of special task force known as the “Gangster Squad”.  All of the characters get to look super cool and/or badass in their own character banners here except for poor Giovanni Ribisi, who’s left fiddling with a film canister for some reason.  It seems like forever ago that the film’s release was pushed back in the wake of this summer’s theater shootings, but the pic will finally hit theaters in a couple of months.

Hit the jump to check out the character banners.  The film also stars Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte, Michael Peña, Anthony Mackie, and Giovanni RibisiGangster Squad opens on January 11th.

Director Spike Lee’s remake of Park Chan-wook’s South Korean new-classic Oldboy is currently in production in New Orleans, and a few more photos from the set have surfaced.  The film stars Josh Bolin as an advertising executive who is kidnapped and imprisoned for 20 years without explanation.  He is abruptly released and sets out to discover the who and why of his captivity, running across a social worker (Elizabeth Olsen) and an illusive man (Sharlto Copley) who allegedly holds the key to his salvation.   We previously got a brief look at Brolin in costume, and these new set photos reveal Olsen’s tattooed character and Brolin sporting some intimidating workout clothes.

Hit the jump to check out the images.  The film also stars Samuel L. Jackson and James RansoneOldboy opens on October 11th, 2013.

Spike Lee’s OLDBOY Remake Set for Release on October 11, 2013

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: October 19th, 2012 at 11:26 am

After a rather drawn-out development period, production is finally underway on director Spike Lee’s remake of director Park Chan-wook’s now-classic 2005 South Korean revenge film OldboyJosh Brolin stars as an advertising executive who is kidnapped and imprisoned for 20 years without explanation.  He is abruptly released and sets out to discover the who and why of his captivity, running across a social worker (Elizabeth Olsen) and an illusive man (Sharlto Copley) who allegedly holds the key to his salvation.

FilmDistrict announced today that the pic will open on October 11th, 2013.  There are currently no other films slated for release at that time, but it puts the redo in a great spot both for commercial success and awards consideration.  Samuel L. Jackson and James Ransone round out the impressive cast, and I can’t wait to see how Lee puts his spin on the material.

5 New Character Posters for GANGSTER SQUAD

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: October 12th, 2012 at 3:27 pm

Five new character posters for director Ruben Fleischer’s (Zombieland) period crime drama Gangster Squad have landed online.  The movie is set in 1940s Los Angeles and stars Sean Penn as real-life gangster Mickey Cohen, who became the target of special task force known as the “Gangster Squad”.  The pic is undergoing a bit of a marketing reboot after being pushed from its fall release date to January in the wake of the tragic theater shootings this summer.  We saw a new trailer yesterday, and these new posters do a fine job of highlighting Fleischer’s stylish take on the period setting (reminiscent of this previously released banner).  The only issue is that they still carry the old September release date.

Hit the jump to check out the posters.  The film also stars Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte, Michael Peña, Anthony Mackie, and Giovanni RibisiGangster Squad opens on January 11th.

New Trailer for GANGSTER SQUAD Starring Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Emma Stone

by Dave Trumbore    Posted: October 11th, 2012 at 4:46 pm

A new trailer for director Ruben Fleischer’s crime drama Gangster Squad has been released.  I was interested in checking out Gangster Squad before the reshoots forced the release date to be pushed back and this trailer hasn’t swayed me one way or the other.  Sean Penn looks positively fierce as gangster Mickey Cohen, but Josh Brolin appears hard-boiled enough to take him on.  Ryan Gosling plays it almost too cool for school, bordering on emotionless, and leading lady Emma Stone is just too innocent to make convincing arm candy for a gangster (I’m talking Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface type of girl here).  Penn will dominate his scenes, but I’m interested to see what dramatic turns Gosling and Stone have in store for us.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Nick NolteMichael PeñaAnthony Mackie, and Giovanni RibisiGangster Squad opens on January 11th.

New Set Photos from WOLVERINE Reveal Silver Samurai and Logan’s Claws, New and Returning Cast of RED 2 and Josh Brolin in Spike Lee’s OLDBOY Remake

by Dave Trumbore    Posted: October 11th, 2012 at 1:33 pm

New set photos for James Mangold’s The Wolverine, Spike Lee’s Oldboy remake and Dean Parisot’s Red 2 have emerged today.  From Wolvie, we don’t get more shots of star Hugh Jackman, but we get a glimpse of Silver Samurai and of the actor playing him (Will Yun Lee).  There’s also a stuntman on hand to unleash the first look at Logan’s claws in action.  The Oldboy images put star Josh Brolin front and center and shirtless for the most part.  Red 2 shows off previous cast members Bruce Willis, John Malkovich and Mary-Louise Parker as well as new additions, Catherine Zeta-Jones and David Thewlis.  Pay special attention to Malkovich’s insane attire (he’s fabulous).

The Wolverine bows on July 26th, 2013. Lee’s Oldboy, also starring Samuel L. Jackson and Elizabeth Olsen, opens sometime next year. Red 2 is slated for an August 2nd, 2013 release.  Hit the jump to see the set photos.

Director Ruben Fleischer Walks Us Through GANGSTER SQUAD with Cool Behind-the-Scenes Images

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: September 17th, 2012 at 8:09 pm

Gangster Squad was recently pushed from September 7 to January 11, 2013.  The extra months give Warner Bros. time to explore a few more interesting promotional avenues, like a new set of cool behind-the-scenes images with commentary from director Ruben Fleischer.  It helps that the movie is set in 1940s Los Angeles—about a small, secret LAPD crew that fights to take down mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn)—where the costumes are slick and the sets are exquisite.

Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte, Michael Peña, Anthony Mackie, and Giovanni Ribisi also star in Gangster Squad.  Hit the jump for the photo tour.

FilmDistrict Acquires Spike Lee’s OLDBOY Remake; 2013 Release Targeted

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: September 7th, 2012 at 8:15 am

spacer

No stranger to violent, auteur-driven films (ie. Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive), FilmDistrict has acquired U.S. distribution rights to director Spike Lee’s remake of Oldboy.  The film is a redo of Park Chan-wook’s now-classic South Korean revenge pic and stars Josh Brolin as an advertising executive who is kidnapped and imprisoned for 20 years without explanation.  He is abruptly released and sets out to discover the who and why of his captivity.  Lee has put together an impressive lead cast, with Elizabeth Olsen as the female lead and Sharlto Copley as “an illusive man who allegedly holds the key to his salvation,” but the director ran into a bit of trouble finding financing for the pic.  As such, word of FilmDistrict’s involvement is very good news indeed.

We recently heard that Samuel L. Jackson and Nate Parker were looking to join the cast, but the press release makes no mention of their involvement.  Chan-wook’s film is incredible but I’m interested to see Lee’s take on the material, especially how he handles the story’s more graphic/disturbing content. Oldboy is expected to be released in 2013, so luckily we don’t have to wait long to find out.  Hit the jump to read the press release, which includes a synopsis.

Josh Brolin in Talks to Star in CRAZY FOR THE STORM, Directed by Sean Penn

by Dave Trumbore    Posted: August 21st, 2012 at 7:36 pm

Earlier this month, we reported that Sean Penn would be directing Crazy for the Storm, an adaptation of the Norman Ollestad memoir scripted by Will Fetters (The Lucky One).  Now, reports have Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men) in talks to star.  Ollestad, at age 11, was the only survivor of a plane crash that killed his father, who would be played by Brolin.  His memoir centers on the skills his father taught him, skills that enabled him to survive the crash.  Fetters’ script made the 2011 Black List and its easy to see what makes this story a compelling one.  Hit the jump for more on Crazy for the Storm.

New Banner Released for GANGSTER SQUAD

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: July 17th, 2012 at 10:26 am

Warner Bros. has released a new banner for Ruben Fleischer‘s upcoming 1940s-crime flick Gangster Squad.  The movie is set in Los Angeles, and stars Sean Penn as real-life gangster Mickey Cohen, who became the target of special task force known as the “Gangster Squad”.  The impressive cast also includes Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte, Michael Peña, Anthony Mackie, and Giovanni Ribisi.  Since the film is about six weeks away, I expect we’ll see a new trailer in the not-too-distant future.  The first trailer was a bit of a let-down, but I love this cast and setting, so hopefully our next look at the film will be a better one.

Hit the jump to check out the banner.  Gangster Squad opens September 7th.

John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who are tasked with disrupting Cohen’s stranglehold under the orders of Bill Parker (Nick Nolte).  Gangster Squad also stars Emma Stone, Giovanni Ribisi, Anthony Mackie, Mireille Enos, Frank Grillo and Michael Pena. Jason Reitman’s LABOR DAY Starts Production; Updated Synopsis Released

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 13th, 2012 at 2:32 pm

spacer

Director Jason Reitman has commenced production on his next feature, the drama Labor Day.  The film is based on the Joyce Maynard novel of the same name and centers on a 13-year-old boy who convinces his reclusive mother to take in a drifter over Labor Day weekend.  It’s later revealed that the man is an escaped convict and the three spend a weekend together that will “shape them for the rest of their lives.”  Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin star as the two leads, and Reitman felt so strongly about his cast that he pushed the production schedule back a year until both Winslet and Brolin were free.

Reitman wrote the screenplay himself and is directing Labor Day as his follow-up to last year’s Young Adult.  As a big fan of Reitman’s past work (Thank You For Smoking, Juno, Up in the Air), I’m eager to see him tackle this weighty dramatic material. Clark Gregg and James Van Der Beek also star in the film.  Hit the jump to read the full press release, which includes the updated synopsis.

TOP 5: SKYFALL Trailer, MEN IN BLACK 3 Interviews, G.I. JOE: RETALIATION Pushed Back, THE GREAT GATSBY Trailer, More THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Coverage than You Can Imagine

by Jason Barr    Posted: May 26th, 2012 at 10:27 am

Remember a few weeks back when I kicked off the summer movie and wedding seasons simultaneously? Well, I wasn’t kidding about the whole wedding thing. Today marks my second ceremony in three weeks and let’s just say that I’m writing portions of today’s Top 5 from a church while awaiting pictures. To make matters even worse, said church is located on a stretch of old highway that is nowhere near an Internet connection that can support anything better than up to 128k up or down. I never thought I would say this, but I’m currently missing my home DSL connection that is slow and unreliable at best. But enough of my bandwidth-starved complaints…

On tap in this week’s Top 5 is the first trailer for the latest Bond film, Skyfall, Men in Black 3 video interviews with Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones and more, G.I. Joe: Retaliation‘s new release date/third dimension, the first trailer and poster for The Great Gatsby, and a plethora of coverage for The Dark Knight Rises. Join me after the break for a brief recap and link to each.

Today, the third Men in Black movie hits theaters.  Barry Sonnenfeld returns as director, and the story finds Will Smith’s Agent J traveling back in time to save Tommy Lee Jones’ Agent K.  Josh Brolin plays a younger version of Jones’ character, and does an incredible job; you’ll be totally convinced you’re watching a young Tommy Lee Jones.  During my interview with Brolin, we talked about his awesome performance, his first day on set, favorite movies, Fahrenheit 451, and future projects like Ruben Fleischer‘s Gangster Squad, Jason Reitman‘s Labor Day, Spike Lee‘s Oldboy, and Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Hit the jump to watch the interview.  Men in Black 3 also stars Jemaine Clement, Alice Eve, and Emma Thompson. In addition, make-up effects artist Rick Baker returns to the franchise and you can see some of his creature work here.  Click on the corresponding links for my conversations with Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith director Barry Sonnenfeld.  For more on the film, here’s all our previous coverage.
