Mission: the Belgian Network for DNA Barcoding aims at establishing a research network that provides an integrated and multidisciplinary molecular systematic and DNA barcoding task force. The network will:

1. coordinate the efforts and knowledge in the field of molecular systematics and DNA barcoding in Belgium
2. exchange experience and provide training opportunities for people in the field of molecular systematics and DNA barcoding
3. stimulate joint reseach in animal and plant groups where molecular systematics and DNA barcoding plays a pivotal role
4. centralize and integrate DNA barcoding activities in Belgium in international initiatives such as the Consortium for the Barcode of Life (CBOL), the European Consortium for the Barcode of Life (ECBOL) and the International Barcode of Life project (iBOL).

Members of the Network  are mainly composed of Belgian research units representing a wide array of thematic interests (ecology, taxonomy, phylogeny, tropical medicine, etc.) and studying many types of organisms (animals, plants, bacteria). Two international consortia, the Consortium for the Barcode of Life (CBOL) and ECBOL are also members of the network. More...

Common scientific interest: DNA barcoding and more generally molecular systematics provide biologists, and particularly taxonomists, with a wealth of data that enable a far better assessment and understanding of Earth's biodiversity. More...

Visibility: formation and objectives of the Belgian Network for DNA Barcoding have been described in the newsletter of the European Consortium for the Barcode of Life and during the Fourth International DNA Barcode of Life Conference (28 Nov. - 03 Dec. 2011, Adelaide, Australia). More...

spacer spacer spacer The network is financially supported by the Fund for Scientific Research – Flanders (FWO) and BELSPO, through JEMU.
