Who Represents the Arab World on Wikipedia?
مقدمة
Introduction
| Thanks for your interest. We are studying both why content on the Middle East and North Africa on Wikipedia seems relatively sparse and undeveloped compared with much of the rest of the world, and the challenges faced by Wikipedia editors from the Middle East and North Africa. For example, did you know that there are more articles in the Catalan Wikipedia than in the Arabic Wikipedia despite the fact that over 500 million people speak Arabic? Arabic content only makes up about 4% of Wikipedia!
This is an online discussion group being conducted by researchers at the University of Oxford in conjunction with American University of Sharjah, L’Ecole Nationale d’Ingénieurs de Tunis and the University of Sheffield. We are interested in content in the Middle East and North Africa region. More information about us is available here: University Project Page and Project Output Page The purpose of this Wiki Focus group is to discuss a variety of topics related to participation on Wikipedia in the MENA region. | To respond you need a valid email address but you do not have to give your real name. We would prefer you to use your Wikipedia name but it is not necessary. Future questions will include: Question 1: (Aug 27th): "Why are there such extreme differences in participation to Wikipedia between different countries in the Middle East and North Africa?" Question 2: (Aug 30th): "Why do we see such big differences in what people write about in Wikipedia? (some parts of the world having much more written about them than others)" Question 3: (TBD): Why is there more content in English about almost everywhere in the Arab world than in Arabic? Question 4: (TBD): Do you face any specific challenges in writing about certain topics? If so, what are they? For instance, having notability challenged, articles marked for deletion, or demands for citations (where none may exist). Question 5: (TBD): Is there enough material or secondary sources about your region in order to properly source articles in Wikipedia?
