About DCML

Overview

DCML enables any IT organization to benefit from the utility computing vision of lower costs, increased agility, and improved service levels.

DCML (Data Center Markup Language), sponsored by the OASIS DCML Member Section, provides the first specification that provides a structured model & encoding to describe, construct, replicate, and recover data center environments and elements. Using DCML, companies now have a standard method to enable data center automation, utility computing, and system management solutions to exchange information about the data center environment to make the vision of automated computing a reality.

DCML Value
DCML provides the only open, XML-based specification designed to do for the data center what HTML did for content and IP did for networking - achieve interoperability and render proprietary approaches irrelevant by providing a systematic, vendor-neutral way to describe the data center environment and policies governing the management of the environment - a fundamental requirement for utility computing.

What Is DCML?
DCML provides the first standard model to describe both a recipe and a blueprint of one or more data center environments. Much as a culinary recipe provides both the list of ingredients and the instructions for successfully combining them, DCML provides both an inventory of data center elements and the desired functional relationship between them. Just as an architectural blueprint established an easily understood, multi-dimensional plan for constructing or replicating a building, DCML can be used to provision or reproduce a complete data center infrastructure - with all of its component relationships, dependencies, configuration, operational policies and management processes.
