Achieving Clean Waterways Through Design: A Case Study of Innovation and Infrastructure (New York) Focus MeetingMonday, January 7, 2013 (6:30 PM - 8:00 PM Eastern)*Due to Hurricane Sandy, this event will be rescheduled for January 7, 2013. Invitations will go out in December. For New York and several other large cities, excess stormwater turns out to indirectly be one of the biggest sources of water pollution. Cities are now embracing new, innovative approaches to stormwater management such as porous pavement, street plantings and green roofs that absorb rain water where it falls. The city has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to create green infrastructure master plans within watershed areas most affected by stormwater runoff: Gowanus Canal, Flushing Bay, and Newtown Creek. One idea being proposed is called Street Creeks, a project developed by Ate Atema, principal of Atema Architecture and Flow Collaborative, with a team of hydrologists, ecologists, and landscape architects. By using a series of in-street channels and pollutant-removing gardens, Street Creeks cost-effectively diverts all storm water from the sewer system, thereby eliminating sewer overflows while providing several ancillary benefits. Please join E2, NRDC's NY Council and Ate Atema on October 30 to learn more about this innovative project, which was recently featured in TED’s City 2.0 Initiative series. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation. Many thanks to Bloomberg for generously hosting this event. Contact Ying Li at yli@nrdc.org with any questions. |
