Phillies are hott this week. First, my coworkers go apeshit over Tony Lukes, then Gilmore Girls drops a Philly-in-the-NY Times shoutout, and now a rad tribute to the city’s music scene makes the blog rounds. Plain Parade asked local bands to cover tunes by musical Philebrities. The result:

Hall & Oates were never this sexy? You’re effin’ kidding, right? We are talking about one of the only white acts to ever top the R&B charts, and they appeared on that chart a number of times. Dudes were smoother than melted chocolate in their prime. (As long as you didn’t actually LOOK at them.)

Philly is a great city but the music scene is somewhat lacking. The radio is shit and not many bands from Philly make it big.
H&O covered “Philadelphia Freedom” (how apropros) on TWO ROOMS, the tribute album to Elton & Bernie. On the same comp Kate Bush covered “Rocket Man,” and that pretty cool believe it or not. The best track by far was Sting’s “Come In Down,” with Bruce Hornsby’s “Madman” a close second. Sorry, this comment got way off topic.
Daryl Hall’s late 70′s Robert Fripp-produced solo lp “Sacred Songs” is a worth tracking down.
josh, if the music scene was “lacking”, i wouldnt have been able to release such a compilation. perhaps the phrase you’re looking for is “grossly overlooked”?
I stand by my statement, the only thing you proved is that there are lots of philly bands that like to perform covers :)
i think it’s cool to do these type of compilations….
represent, represent….
what type of music scene are we talking about here?
philly has an obvious musical history and tradition….
mainly in r&b and soul and hip hop….
so…to put out something like this that shows the other side….
should be commended…
you should post links to some of these bands, maybe?
other cities should do this….
i’m working on one in augusta, georgia….
where local bands do their homage to james brown, the godfather of soul…..and local crazy celebrity genius….
it’s a good way to introduce the bands…and the songs….
i’m just sayin’.

Matt Pond PA and Audible have been prominently featured on The O.C. Dr. Dog have received accolades from the New York Times and Rolling Stone, toured with My Morning Jacket and have recently signed to indie powerhouse Rough Trade. The Capitol Years were given the rare distinction of being the opening band on the Pixies’ inaugural reunion gig. Hail Social wowed audiences across the country opening for Interpol and signed to Polyvinyl Records. Espers stunned crowds across the US and UK opening up for acts such as Devendra Banhart, were recently rated #33 in Uncut Magazine’s “Best of 2005″ (beating out indie heavyweights Bright Eyes and M.I.A.) and appeared on Believer Magazine’s newest compilation alongside the wonderfully local Cynthia G Mason. The Spinto Band were adopted by former SPIN editor/current Stolen Transmission label owner Sarah “Ultragrrrl” Lewittinn, and their their song “Oh Mandy” has become the soundtrack to many dancefloor freakouts and more recently, a Sears commercial. Pitchfork’s heaped critical praise to Espers, National Eye, Man Man, Pattern Is Movement, Make A Rising — just to name a few. And don’t forget the whole ongoing Nick Hornby/Marah love-in.

Matt Pond PA are based in Brooklyn and the Spinto Band is from Wilmington as I’m sure you’re aware…. but I get your larger point. I’m not knockin’ philly or anything I grew up here, it just stinks that G. Love and SS is probably the widest known act to come out of philly in 10 years.
eh. so the song was ok. but not going to be playing on my ipod any time soon.
Kurt Heasley’s Lilys are an unfortunate exclusion, as well.
matt pond pa was from philly first and the spintos def. live here. i see nick around all the time!
i know you’re not trying to argue, so no worries. however, to say philly’s music scene is “lacking” isnt 100% accurate. we’re the third largest music market in the country and we’ve got great independent radio in the form of WXPN, WPRB and WKDU. ive lived here for 10 years and right now, there’s so much awesome stuff going on, it makes my head want to explode. man, i love this city.

Oates ‘stache is sweet-candy. I do love these guys in a non-ironic kind of way.
All the bands on this comp play their own original music; they’re not usually cover bands. The concept for this comp was for Philly bands to cover other locals. It’s a fun idea! I love hearing bands mess with cover songs and do a new take on them. Philly is an amazing city with a great scene.
