September 13, 2011—The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) welcomes the enactment in Peru of a law on prior consultation of indigenous peoples, which incorporates into domestic law a right already recognized in international human rights law and thus constitutes a significant step forward in defending the human rights of the country’s indigenous peoples.
