Stop, Now, This Affront To Justice
Last week, one of the administrators at my school showed us a phone confiscated from a student earlier that day. With glee on her face she then proceeded to brag about how she was reading all of the student’s (in question) text messages. She then proceeded to ask a student to help read the student’s sent text messages. When I confronted her about this, she justified this by saying, “it’s against the rules to text in class”. I believe this is absolutely not only immoral, “fagadocious” and downright skanky that this is also an illegal invasion of privacy! According to this article from NPR,
administrators have the right to read text messages if there is a reasonable suspicion of a threat to public safety. To provide some context, this phone was confiscated from a 13-14 year old in middle school. This entire situation is simple ridiculous. Opinions?
Oh yeah, there is also this little thing called the Fourth Amendment . Have you ever heard of it? It’s frightening how many people who haven’t.
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
