Marc Ecko Star Wars Hoodies Up For Grabs!

It’s been a while since we had a giveaway, but I am pretty sure that today’s items are worth the wait. Up for grabs are Star Wars hoodies and track jackets made by well known brand Marc Ecko. Recently, Marc Ecko Cut & Sew teamed up with Lucasfilm to create a Star Wars line. You can’t go wrong with that, really. Taking a look at the results of the collaboration, it sure does look like they have made the right decision to go down this path. The hoodies are totally recognizable to any Star Wars fan, given that the designs tap into “specific details that make up the appearance of Read more »

Hua Tunan’s Splatter Art Is the Best You’ll See This Week

Have you ever tried creating works of art by melting crayon and quickly blowing so that the melted material will splatter all over a white sheet of paper? The idea is to create something beautiful, albeit maybe totally indecipherable. I hope that there’s at least one who can relate, so I don’t feel too weird. ;) Then again, I think that Hua Tunan, or Chen Yingjie in real life, has got my back in this regard. Not that what I created as a child would have even remotely resembled Tunan’s “splatter art”, but I think that anyone can see that the similarity in intention. Tunan is a known figure in Read more »

Anime & Comics

Adapting To Exile

Movie adaptations within comics are hardly renowned as masterpieces, as any comics and sci-fi fan of any experience will know. It is rare that one of these adaptations are a treasure unto themselves. Both Marvel and DC have repeatedly demonstrated how difficult and prone to self-parody the adaptation can really be. Only one company stands in contradiction to this, that being Dark Horse, whether you look at their Star Wars adaptations or more importantly, their renderings of the classic Aliens and Predator movies. Not even IDW have demonstrated that level of quality in direct adaptations. Spin-offs, extended universe and original material for their licenced properties, sure. IDW is a leader Read more »

Guilty Crown vs Sword Art Online

Guilty Crown and Sword Art Online are two anime that cater to the same demographic (male teens) and feature roughly equal amounts of action and flirting. Both have a young male protagonist who is thrust into battle and becomes the most powerful character. They also both have a strong female character that later ends up in the role of damsel-in-distress. The animation quality and popularity of each seriesโ€™ musical artists have similar levels of popularity. Why then is Sword Art Online generally better reviewed than Guilty Crown? (Note: spoilers below.) One could argue that people just like anime about virtual realities more than ones about special powers, but I think Read more »

Cataclysm Redux

Today, the second printing of Planet Of The Apes: Cataclysm #1 hits the stands, and somewhat late to the party, I would like to see it hit a third. For anyone who watched the original trilogy (quintology?) of movies, it holds a special place in our hearts. As good as the 2011 movie was, when someone mentions the Planet of the Apes, what do we think of? The Statue of Liberty buried in the sand. Charlton Heston wandering through the desert sands. Dr Cornelius. For once sharing something in common with the younger readers of this column, the very first film was released many years before I was born, and Read more »

Accel World Review

One of the more popular anime series that aired this year was Accel World, and for good reason. The series is based on the light novels of the same name written by Reki Kawahara and is 24 episodes long. An interesting fact that some people may not know is that it takes place in the same world as Sword Art Online, but further into the future. Accel World is set in a future where children have devices called neuro-linkers installed on their necks, which acts much like a personal computer that you always have access to. The main character, Haruyuki, is a short and fat high school boy that is Read more »
