Our Top 5 Moments From Glamour‘s Women Of The Year Awards

It would have been impossible to walk away from last night’s Glamour Women Of The Year Awards feeling anything less than inspired.
Carnegie Hall was packed to the rafters (or, rather, to the famously ornate ceiling) with beautiful, accomplished women of all ages and walks of life, brought together for the 22nd annual celebration of fearless females from around the world.
While Selena Gomez may be the face of this year’s honorees, scoring the December cover of the glossy, the list of incredible women who received awards last night included an Oscar-winning Pakistani documentarian, a Supreme Court Justice, Team USA‘s gold medal Olympians, and a woman fighting to prevent childhood sexual abuse. Needless to say, there was no shortage of powerful, funny, and entertaining moments throughout the ceremony, so here are just a few of our favorites:
- Anna Wintour presenting Annie Leibovitz with her award, describing the countless times she’s gotten a call from an editor on set with the nervous confession that “things are going in a slightly different direction here.” Annie, as she says, “calls the shots.”
- Jenna Lyons‘ incredibly touching acceptance speech. The J. Crew Creative Director thanked her 6-year-old son Beckett, “who reminds me every day that the world revolves around him, not me,” CEO Mickey Drexler, and, for the first time, publicly acknowledged rumored girlfriend Courtney Crangi, “who has shown me new love.” She spoke of her days working in the hallway as an assistant’s assistant when she first started at the company, and urged the crowd to “find what you love and make it your day job.”
- Lena Dunham taking off her shoes within a minute of getting on stage, and calling out the aforementioned J. Crew guru for her sartorial influence: “By the way, Jenna Lyons,” she cracked, “you’re the reason I feel comfortable wearing shorts and it’s going horribly for me, so thanks for that.”
- Ruth Bader Ginsburg being awesome at almost 80 years old. The reel of her accomplishments stretched over half a century and included kudos from Bill Clinton. Meanwhile, Justice Ginburg took the podium and acknowledged that, while judges’ shapeless black robes aren’t the most glamorous garments around, she and the other women on the bench have taken to sewing in pockets and jazzing them up with ruffles and foulards.
- Cynthia Nixon, Mamie Gummer, and Grace Gummer reciting the commencement address delivered by the incomparable Nora Ephron at her alma mater Wellesley College in 1996:
“Whatever you choose, however many roads you travel, I hope that you choose not to be a lady. I hope you will find some way to break the rules and make a little trouble out there. And I also hope that you will choose to make some of that trouble on behalf of women.”
