Nick Hornby’s “Stuff I’ve Been Reading” and the comics section, edited by Alvin Buenaventura, are on hiatus until early 2013, because we believe in unions and in mandated vacation time.
Quite by coincidence, we are featuring in this issue interviews with two artists, Maurice Sendak and Leonora Carrington, who are no longer living, although the interviews were conducted when they were. We are humbled to share the work and words of two such uncompromising, visionary, and extraordinary human beings.

OUR OFFICIAL COLUMNIST AND EXPLORER OF THE NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE COMMENTS ON YESTERDAY’S ANNOUNCEMENT THAT MO YAN IS THIS YEAR’S WINNER.
Your humble columnist, around one-eighths through his reading of one book by each Nobel laureate in literature, takes a moment to salute Mo Yan on his winning of this year’s prize. Like many American readers, I feel shamed and sheepish for knowing only vaguely of the gentleman’s work, but readers of What The Swedes Read will know that I’ll get to him soon enough.
