spacer  Why are some programs not available for downloading?

  • The program contains significant amounts of copyrighted music or other material.

spacer  I've only got a 56k dialup connection. Can I still download WPR programs?

Yes, but an hour WPR program will take nearly an hour to download using a dialup connection! Instead, You may want to simply listen to our online streaming archives which "plays" a program using Windows Media Player or other streaming media player. If you still want to download the program, you can be doing other things on your PC while the file is downloading in the background. Here's a table that may help.

ESTIMATED DOWNLOAD TIME

Dial-Up50 Kbps (0.05 Mbps)50 Minutes
DSL Line500 Kbps (0.5 Mbps)5 Minutes

spacer
spacer  What format does WPR use for their downloadable program files?

We used the MP3 format which is playable on almost every computer and portable player made. Most programs are encoded at 64kbps - an acceptable quality for monaural "talk" programming. A few programs like "Michael Feldman's Whad'Ya Know?" are encoded in stereo at a higher bitrate. If you're concerned that our format may not be compatible with your media player, download the short, three minute test file below and launch it in your player.

spacer
spacer  Once I download a program, can I burn it to a CD so I can listen to it on my CD player?

Yes. Most CD burning software (Nero, Roxio, iTunes, etc) can create a "music CD" directly from an MP3 file. We suggest you save the file on your hard drive before attempting to burn the CD.

spacer
spacer  Is there a limit to the number of programs I can download?

Yes, but it's very liberal. We are limiting downloads to 20 requests per day per visitor because of bandwidth and processer limitations. If you request a program and it fails during the download process, you can simply click the Download button again to restart it. Downloading the same program more than once does not count against the 20 downloads/day limitation.

spacer
spacer  Do WPR's MP3 files have any copyright restrictions I should be aware of?

You can download to your PC or MP3 player and burn the programs to CDs. You cannot edit or reorganize the content of the program in any way. We understand that some CD software will however change or "normalize" the recorded audio levels during the burning process, and this is acceptable. WPR downloads cannot be sold or posted on other web sites without permission. All WPR programming is © Copyright University of Wisconsin-Extension.
