Carbon Pollution: An Urgent Threat from Coal
Coal burning is responsible for nearly one third of US carbon emissions—the air pollution that is the main contributor to climate disruption.
Climate disruption has already taken a toll on our country, manifesting in extreme weather like massive hurricanes, intense storms, devastating droughts, deadly wildfires, and record-breaking heat waves. Glaciers are melting and sea levels are rising. Scientists and meteorologists agree that climate disruption is happening and carbon pollution is a major contributor.
In 2007, the Supreme Court ruled that the Clean Air Act requires the Environmental Protection Agency to take action to address carbon pollution. And in March 2012, President Obama and the EPA made history by proposing the ο¬rst-ever national limits on carbon pollution for new power plants. By establishing these carbon-pollution protections, the EPA is moving to clean up and modernize the way we power our country. The new safeguards will ensure that our kids, our communities, and America’s workforce are healthier, while also creating much-needed jobs and fighting climate disruption.
