Panel Five: Security from Sexual Violence

 

This panel will examine how to protect individuals from conflict-related sexual and gender-based violence.  It will seek to define the goals of “security” in this context and examine best practices in law enforcement. It will also review current research and knowledge about the provision and limitations of security efforts – from UN peacekeeping, to national government efforts, to the availability of safe shelter for victims-survivors.

Panel Six: Methodological Challenges and Opportunities

 

This panel will examine how we can best, ethically and methodologically, generate good qualitative and quantitative data on sexual violence in armed conflict. It will survey the types of data that currently exist, the biases inherent in each type of data, the various methods of collecting data and how the data are used in research. Finally, the panel will generate a discussion as to how various researchers’ efforts can inform and support each other’s work and the process of policy creation.
