Welcome to Hackney Skeptics in the Pub!

This is the third Skeptics in the Pub set up in London (the other two groups being London  and Westminster), started by Alice Sheppard and James Robson in autumn 2011. We'll be meeting every last Monday of the month at the Hackney Attic - here's their page about us, where you can also buy a ticket in advance if you like.

Talks start between 7.30 and 8pm, followed by an interval and an informal question and answer session. You'll be free to come and go as you'll get a hand stamp, and eat or drink while you're there. Please come and say hello, we want everyone to feel welcome!

We plan on being the Skeptics with a science twist. This will involve some (not all!) talks having a science element - and if you have any sciencey ideas for talks or just for cool experiments we could run during the interval, please let us know.

What's the talk about?

Is the world going to end four days after the talk? Probably not, as you know. But did the Mayans really predict an end to the world this December, and what is the actual astronomy behind the "Mayan calendar" business?

Tom Kerss is an astronomy communicator who runs a lot of public projects, and makes the night sky accessible in London! You can find him at Baker Street Astronomers in Regent's Park once a month, and as @tomkerss on Twitter.
