The ND Human Dignity Project

The Notre Dame Project on Human Dignity wishes to take up the challenge of persuasively defining and defending human dignity through an ongoing series of speakers, symposia, classes, retreats, and special learning events for students.

The objectives of the project are:

  1. To defend the right to life from conception to natural death by persuasively clarifying the idea of human dignity on which it is based.
  2. To defend the other human rights mentioned by John Paul II by persuasively clarifying the idea of human dignity on which they are based.
  3. To help those who defend Catholic Social Teaching, but not the right to life, or those who defend the right to life but show little interest in Catholic Social Teaching, to see how both are founded on the core concept of human dignity, and both therefore have a shared stake in defending both Catholic Social teaching and the right to life.
  4. To clarify the nature and role of the Church as the “sign and safeguard” of human dignity, and to form students in a way that advances the Church’s role.
  5. To make the concept of human dignity a topic that is “in the air” on campus, and that people become accustomed to talking about and interested in advancing.
  6. To contribute to the larger philosophical and theological discussion of the meaning of the concept of human dignity in order to discover how to make this concept persuasive for all people.
  7. To further the witness of the Church in proclaiming the Gospel of Life.

The ND Human Dignity Project will be housed at the Institute for Church Life, and led and administered by the University Life Initiatives Coordinator.  We welcome partnerships with other institutes, offices and departments at the University of Notre Dame in this important endeavor.
