Coders/HIM

The coding workforce will need to the ability to assign the ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and, if facility based, ICD-10-PCS procedure codes. In addition, they will need to strengthen their foundational A&P skills and master new terminology in advance of intensive code set education.

It is recommended that organizations begin as soon  as possible to assess and strengthen anatomy and physiology foundational skills and provide a basic overview of the ICD-10 system to coders. Intensive proficiency education is recommended 9-12 months prior to the effective date. Timing of education may be impacted by the organization’s decision on whether or not to dual code.

HCPro has educated inpatient, outpatient, and professional services coders through national HCPro Boot Camps since 2006; and has educated coders in audioconference, webcast, and online formats for over 10 years. We offer live instructor-led or online education modules for both introductory education and comprehensive skills proficiency. Boot camps educate on the code set as a whole or provide overview and ICD-10-CM education only, by chapter with hands-on case studies and practical exercises drawn from medical records.

In addition, the 16 course series on Anatomy and Physiology for coders: ICD-10 prepares coders with foundational knowledge and medical terminology they will need.

Audioconference and webcast education by specific specialty is available to address targeted needs, and HCPro offers follow-up continuing education through the JustCoding continuing education web portal.
