With Valentine’s Day getting closer, I thought it might be fun to highlight some of my favorite shops in the area. So last week, Philly.com published a cute piece from me about geeky places to shop in Philadelphia.

I talk about Omoi (my favorite store in the city), the Hello World & Home boutiques, Girls Can Tell, Whipped Bakeshop, and Jinxed. Check it out here!

Four in February: Challenge Accepted

by eric on January 28, 2013

spacer

Mike Suszek, a contributor to my favorite video game blog, Joystiq, has issued a challenge to his readers. That challenge has been picked up by Kotaku, and subsequently has a Facebook page dedicated to the cause.

Four in February.

The idea?

Beat four video games in your backlog that you’ve been meaning to play. I’m pretty guilty of picking up new releases and abandoning them in favor of another new game, or buying older games because they’re on sale, and then never playing them. My game library is a bit embarrassing in that respect, full of games I’ve never quite bothered with.

So Mike, I accept your challenge. Here’s what I’ll be playing through the month of February.  [click to continue…]

What I Listened To While Writing In 2012

by eric on January 22, 2013

spacer

I sure did write a lot last year.

There were a handful of print articles and  some fun guest blog posts. And while I shared all of that stuff with my friends and linked it all out here and via social media, a lot of my scribbling this year isn’t quite ready for the public to scope out.

Namely, the finished YA manuscript my agent is shopping around, a half finished sequel to that book, and a secret finished book. And then there’s writing and editing blog posts for Geekadelphia and Quirk’s website.

Man, that’s a lot of words.

After reading the brilliant Scott Pilgrim series by Bryan Lee O’Malley, I started recording what I was listening to while writing. He does it too, at the end of each book. So I opened up the manuscripts for those YA books this weekend, flipped to the end, and found the small list. I started one with the guidebook too.

Here’s what I was rocking out to this year while writing. An unsurprising list.

The Gaslight Anthem – Handwritten: “If I put too much blood on the page.” Damn Brian Fallon. This guy gets it. If I get another tattoo after my sleeve is finished, it might just end up being the lyrics to Blood On The Page from The Gaslight Anthem’s Handwritten album.

The Horrible Crowes – Elsie: I picked up Brian Fallon’s side project when I randomly caught word of it on Absolutepunk. It’s a lot like The Gaslight Anthem, but softer and darker. [click to continue…]

Photo Shoot With Kyle Cassidy

by eric on January 17, 2013

spacer

So the other day, I had a photo shoot with Kyle Cassidy.

Some of you might know him from his hilarious presentation at the Philly Geek Awards. Or due to his amazing work with folks like Neil Gaiman, Amanda Palmer, and countless others. Or maybe from his beautiful photography books. Check out War Paint. Right now.

I could ramble and rant about Kyle nonstop. Great guy, great photographer. Needless to say, I was pretty damn thrilled he agreed to take my photos.

I’ve always had this thing for Post It Notes and 8-bit mosaics. I made a big Space Invader (twice!) back at my old job (the first ended up on Kotaku), started to make one at Quirk (I gave up, they didn’t stick well), and I’ve made a few attempts at small ones in my apartment. But I could never really capture what I wanted to with a camera.

spacer

Enter, a Kyle.

He took the pictures after a little over an hour of sticking Post Its up on a wall in the basement of Indy Hall. The shoot didn’t take long, maybe a half hour or so… I lost track of time. I was smiling and laughing so damn much.

Why fancy new photos? Word on the street is I’ve got a book coming out. WHAT! More on that soon, promise.

My favorite from the shoot is above. Below, you’ll find a number of other favorites and fun behind-the-scenes snaps. Enjoy!

A huge thank you to my pals over at Indy Hall. Not only for giving me the space for the shoot, but for taking the time to help me get all those Post Its up on that wall. Sean, Parker, Jake, Adam, Kara… seriously, you guys rule. And my foxy lady joined in. Also, my coworker at Quirk, Katie. I don’t know how she did it, but her arrangements were far more perfect than the rest of ours.

And of course, huge thanks to Kyle and his photo crew. I couldn’t be happier.

New Fringe Book Fully Integrates Television & Publishing: Guest Post on BookRiot

by eric on January 15, 2013

spacer I’ve got a new guest post up on BookRiot, talking about the new Fringe book, September’s Notebook.

I was pretty psyched when I got the press release about this title. The fact that the book is a part of the show’s mythology is really neat. Innovation. I dig it.

It’s also by an author local to Philly! Yay!

Check it out here.

Search Awards: I Became A Writer But That’s Not Important

by eric on January 7, 2013

When I moved to Philadelphia, one of the first blogs I started to read actively was the blog of local photographer Steve Weinik. Philly folks might know him from his work with the Mural Arts Program and the award winning film Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles.

Me? I got to know him through his hilarious blog posts. Along with his photography misadventures, he used to write up these ‘search awards’ lists, detailing the weirdest ways people found his site.

So, in that tradition, here are my search awards for 2012. The ten weirdest ways people have stumbled upon my site in 2012.

  • Pimp Suits: 646
  • Release the Kraken: 108
  • Kishwer Vikaas: 47 (Um, @Phillygrrl?)
  • DJ Hulk Hogan: 18
  • You stood up to me that was the test: 15
  • My chinchilla fell in the toilet: 12
  • Pizza and red wine: 6
  • Do chinchillas get cold?: 3
  • I became a writer but that’s not important: 3
  • Of all the prostitutes you’re the smartest: 3

A majority of people made it to my site looking for perfectly normal things though. Thousands of people came here looking for Master Chief armor, an analysis of Joyas Voladoras by Brian Doyle, Geekadelphia, Rocketeer costume supplies, and sometimes for me. Sometimes.

Though I suppose for anyone else, someone searching for Master Chief and Rocketeer armor isn’t exactly normal. But, this is my life. This is what I do.

Social Media & Publishing: Workshop @ Digital Book World

by eric on January 6, 2013

spacer

I love visiting colleges and chatting about publishing and social media. I’ve done it a few times, visiting NYU and Arcadia, and I’ve attended plenty of PubHub events at Rosemont College.

Next week, I’ll be chatting with a number of publishing professionals at Digital Book World in NYC on January 15th.

I’m really excited about it, as this is my first time speaking at a publishing conference. I would be nervous and terrified, but I’ve got the wonderful and talented Rebecca Schinsky joining me. She’s the gal at BookRiot who edits things, chiefly.

Details on the workshop can be found here. If you use the code BOOKRIOT, you can get 20% off the entire Digital Book World conference. Score!

Oh! And Rebecca wrote an amazing post for the Expo website. Check that out here. What a gal.

Legend by Marie Lu

by eric on January 4, 2013

spacer

I tried to read a lot while I was away for the holidays. Spent a lot of time reading the Y: The Last Man series (amazing! thank you Brave New Worlds!) and starting a number of books in my backlog. One of which, was Legend by Marie Lu.

I picked it up for $1.99 during  an Amazon Kindle Deal of the Day. It was a book I always meant to pick up, because I really love me some dystopian YA. But with so many other great books out there in the genre (Hunger Games, Divergent), I wasn’t in a rush to pick it up.

Turns out, that was a mistake. [click to continue…]

My Ten Favorite Reads of 2012

by eric on December 19, 2012

spacer

I think one of the most difficult things about working in publishing and loving books… is working in publishing and loving books.

Between going to BEA, Comic Con, and having publicity friends send me books they are excited about, a lot of great reads float across my desk at work and sit on my nightstand at home. And then there are those Amazon Kindle deals! I buy way too many of those, and my Kindle is packed.

These ten however, were my absolute favorites this year. If you don’t have them on your to-read shelf on Goodreads or in your Amazon wishlist, get on that. These are great.

spacer

Sailor Twain: Or The Mermaid In The Hudson by Mark Siegel: I noticed this book at New York Comic Con this year, and I’m still kicking myself for not meeting the author. I was immediately drawn to the cover and the fact that it promised a book full of literary references.

Beautifully illustrated with charcoal pencil and accompanied by a sweeping tale of romance and fantasy… all set on a steamboat in the Hudson? It’s rare to find a graphic novel that has writing that’s as beautiful as the art. And this is one of them.

spacer

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern: Okay okay, The Night Circus came out last year, but I only got around to reading it earlier this year. And hey, it came out in paperback this year. So it counts. Problem? Fight me.

I honestly picked up The Night Circus looking for another great YA read while researching for my own book… and was surprised to find a book that was clearly more adult. A dark romance set in a magical setting, The Night Circus is one of those books that is hard to describe. You really just need to read it. Like, immediately.

Also, the author is an absolute sweetheart. Follow her on Twitter at @erinmorgenstern.  [click to continue…]

The Joys of Making Your Own Magic the Gathering Counters

by eric on December 17, 2012

spacer

Yes, they just look like rocks. Shut up.

Those of you who know me, know that when I travel, I’m not big on souvenirs. I take lots of pictures (an obnoxious amount sometimes, sorry Jess), and that’s all I really need. Though sometimes I bring horribly kitschy things home for coworkers.

However, when I went to visit my buddy Dario out in Colorado at the end of the Summer, I wanted to bring home a little something to commemorate our epic mountain climbing adventure. Because seriously, as we endured the Incline, I thought we were going to die. Death was upon us.

That was the thought going through my head as we sat at the top of the trail snapping photos. But what would be appropriate? I didn’t want a snowglobe or a “I survived The Incline” t-shirt. I picked at some of the rocks, and Dario made a quip about how we should save some for our Magic game later.

For counters.

And that’s when I started stuffing them into my satchel.

As we walked down the winding trail back to the bottom of the mountain, I picked up small rocks that looked about the right size, while Dario and his girlfriend told me not to fall far behind, as I might get eaten by a cougar. I responded to these threats of nature by ordering a rock tumbler on Amazon on my iPhone.

Fast forward a few weeks, and I’ve got these.

It took about two months in a rock tumbler to get them to be smooth and shiny, and in the end, they really just look like any old rocks you could pick up at your local aquarium for your fish tank. But whatever.

Now whenever I play Magic with my friends here in Philly, I have tiny little reminders about that time in Colorado with one of my best friends, and the many games we played. And that mountain we conquered together.

Best souvenir ever.  [click to continue…]
