Merlot is a red wine grape for both blending grape and for complete wines. Merlot probabaly comes from an Old French word for young blackbird like Merlin in English. Merlot wines and wines based on merlot usually have berry, plum, and currant flavours. Merlot is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and so helps to reduce the tannin content of the latter and reputed to have some health benefits.
Merlot is often considered to be the major grape for Bordeaux wines and one of the most popular red wines. This flexibility has helped to make it one of the world's most frequently grown grape.
