Prince – ‘Breakfast Can Wait’

2 hours ago in New Music
spacer

The new Prince song is what they call in the soul industry as a baby maker. Prince wants his lady before the first meal of the day and goes heavy on the innuendo to a bumpin’ soulful beat. “Grits and gravy, cheese eggs and jam / Can nobody cook it like you girl / No ma’am!” While it doesn’t quite go as explicit into metaphorical ridiculousness as R Kelly’s celestial sex-obsessed ‘Sex Planet’ (“I’m about to twinkle it / And touch your soul / Once I enter into your black hole” = GROSS), it’s a devilishly good track. As the purple one himself says “Prince is in charge now.” He’s still the dude. The song is available to purchase at 3rdeyegirl.com along with ‘Screwdriver’ and a couple of other tracks. There’s also another site and a Twitter feed involved somehow so maybe Prince has retracted his “the internet is completely over” stance somewhat.

Listen to Eomac’s bass-heavy new EP Angel

Ian McDonnell aka Eomac is prolific enough electronic producer at the best of times posting a monthly mix and regular EPs and compilations of his own material. That’s not to mention his work with Lakker. His latest Angel EP (out for download on Monday) leans on the heavier bass side of things heavily enough that Ian felt it was only right to put it out under another moniker EeOOo. The five tracks include a Beyoncé ‘Halo’ remix, and my personal highlight the flute sampling ‘Peru’:

Chicago brother and sister  Elliot and Natalie Bergman Wild Belle have made small waves in the past year with their tropical dub pop songs ‘It’s Too Late’ and ‘Keep You’. They’re playing Academy 2 (yes, a basement is not the place for tropical pop but, in fairness, neither is Ireland) on March 30th on their European tour. Ticket prices tbc. Full Euro dates.

Cadence Weapon – ‘Hype Man’ (video)

Cadence Weapon’s Hope In Dirt City slipped through the listening cracks last year a bit for me. The bass-heavy ‘Hype Man’ points at the gulf between Rollie and other rappers by highlighting the fact that Mr Pemberton doesn’t need one. Video by George Vale.
