Why most people don't figure it out on their own, even when they tried their damnedest

Having worked directly with dozens of organizations and their communities around the world, I've gotten to see the patterns of success...but not without also seeing the patterns of failure.

  • The pressures of business or other conflicting "interests" often get in the way and we act against the values and beliefs we actually hold.
  • Doubletalk - people say one thing when they really mean or want something else, sometimes because they're intentionally being deceptive but other times because they don't know what they really mean or want.
  • We're too selfish - as human beings, we're wired to look out for our own interests. The way our brains process information, we want to assume that everything is about us.
  • We're too generous - as human beings, we're wired to "feel good" when we give. This leads to unsustainable behavior and eventually a "shutdown" when our generosity isn't acknowledged.
  • The fear of being vulnerable - showing weakness as a leader is often regarded as a shortcoming, and it certainly can be. But being afraid of your weaknesses - and even moreso of being afraid of showing them to the people you lead - consistently leads to disastrous outcomes.
