Prep Step

Foodies - rejoice  Now there is a way to use your iPad in the kitchen with no fear of knocking it down or splashing it with hot oil. The Prep Step iPad stand and splash guard answers both concerns, and does it with elegance. The piece features a low-profile doc that can hold your device flat or at an angle in landscape or portrait mode. A static-cling splash guard protects the screen. And a neat storage compartment in the rear is another nice touch. The product comes soon to the Quirky shop.

The Bunkie

spacer

The Bunkie is a collaborative effort between industrial design firm 608 Design and BLDG Workshop. A concept at this point, the project can be implemented on any plot of land and fit any landscape. The Bunkie can serve as a cottage or a guest addition to an existing home. Its clever design allows to accommodate four people. Two queen sized murphy beds are built into one wall while a dining table and four chairs are integrated into another. The transition between sleeping and dining modes is seamless and fast. All elements are pre-manufactured and shipped flat-packed to a location. Small enough not to require a building permit, the Bunkie is a low cost, low impact and low fuss house. It’d be exciting to see this project going live.

Foldin

spacer

Lithuania based design studio etc.etc. came up with this clever modular storage item, called Foldin. This shelving unit is comprised of a wooden frame and folding shelves (hence the name). The frame is expandable and can hold from two to twenty shelf segments. Each shelf is made of three plywood pannels connected to each other via a piece of felt. This flexible structure allows to change the look of the unit easily depending on a situation. The frame itself can serve as a holder for hooks or hangable items. The piece ships and stores flat.

Pools

spacer

Pools is a minimalist collection of stoneware by Vancouver based design studio Fleet Objects. The line consists of plates, bowls and other types of multifunctional vessels that can be combined or used separately in many different ways. The pieces can work equally well as tableware for serving food and drink, vases for displaying flowers, containers for storing things, or all of these purposes depending on the occasion. Minimalist and multifunctional – the two of my favorite m-words… Add to this a well-thought-out color scheme that allows you to mix and match these pieces and always strike a beautiful combination. They make a great gift too. Available for purchase here.

- A gorgeous 4-story garden home. My real estate envy is in flames.

- An unsettling short animation about humanity’s destructive behavior.

- A dream home for cats by Asahi Kasei.

- I’m in love with this to-do app at the moment. Even though it’s often very mean to me.

- And something adorable for the senses – bird perch/amplifier.

Hang Up

spacer

HangUp is an adaptable shelf, designed by Moritz Putzier for Müller Möbelwerkstätten. Designer embraced the nessesity of change in our urban lives and created an item that can be easily applied to many situations. Thanks to the variety of sizes and simplicity of the mounting process (one nail is all it takes to mount the shelf), HangUp can fit any space and multiple storage needs. You also have a choice between shelves and metal boxes – equally easily attached to the main structure. Watch the video to see the piece in action.

Home Garden Lamp

Orto Volante suspension lamp, created by studio De-Signum for Italian brand Verde Profilo, is a interesting attempt to build an indoor garden without taking any counter space whatsoever. The piece incorporates ten white ceramic pots inside the powder coated steel lampshade (the hanging pots come with the special kit for upside down planting). I like the synergy between the elements – light helps the growing process and plants work as a defuser, helping to achieve more subtle illumination. A great idea for an urban kitchen.

Flaye Extendable Table

Flaye dining table by Austrian furniture manufacturer Team7 takes space-saving to a new technological level. Not only the piece extends by 100 cm, it does it painlessly in less than 5 seconds. Thanks to non-stop synchronised pull-out technology, the table transforms in one fluid motion from one state to the next and back. Flaye has landed the Innovation Award 2013, which surprises me not one bit. Check out the video to see how it works.
