Chronic diseases, such as hypertension (high blood pressure) are the primary cause of premature death in the developed world. As healthcare costs rise and people live longer there is growing pressure for people to take greater responsibility for monitoring and managing their own health. Digital blood pressure monitors, for example, can be used to detect signs of hypertension. These devices are now available off the shelf starting from about £15. If we expect people to use these devices on a regular basis, though, they need to be usable, and provide a good user experience, so that people can integrate them into their everyday lives.
