Writing A Series by Karenna Colcroft

Series have become very popular in romance, and it seems that the trend is especially prevalent in e-publishing. Authors put out book after book set in a particular town or involving members of the same family or pack, or even following the same couple (or more), as in my M/M paranormal romance series Real Werewolves Dont Eat Meat, from MLR Press.

Series have a few benefits. For one thing, as later books are released, readers are already familiar with the worlds and some of the characters. Knowing that its a series, readers sometimes clamor for the next book. And as subsequent books are released, sales of the previous books often see a new bump as readers who havent previously found the stories try to get caught up.

Knowing Or Not Knowing What Comes Next by Beth Daniels, aka Beth Henderson, J.B. Dane

In the beginning of time story telling time, that is folks gathered around a campfire (because I cant picture story telling happening before there were campfires) and shared the latest news. News was very important to early man because if the women didnt know who had been the bravest on the hunt they wouldnt know who to flirt with in an effort to produce a better class of children. Chances are it didnt matter to the men how well a particular woman was at scouting out fruits and vegetables or chewing the shaved pelt of a kill to make is softer to wear (gross, right?) because as men have been telling women for eons, their goal when it comes to mating is just show up naked and Ill take care of the rest.

Okay, maybe Im being facetious but the point is story telling goes back a long way and has its origins in sharing the news.
The next step in story telling came when someone invented religion because if there were now gods pulling the strings on things (engaging in political shenanigans against each other and sucking a few mortals into their soap operas), then inquiring minds wanted to know what theyd been up to, what they looked like, what they were wearing, who they were sleeping with, and what they were in charge of so everyone knew who to direct the prayers and sacrifices to.

Don't Ever Dare Not To Dream by Leanna Harrow

Since signing on with a publisher in late November 2012, I have had the chance to talk with a lot of authors. I've heard them talk about how difficult writing is. Some of them suffer from writer's block, some suffer with character formation and story lines and some of them just suffer.

I had a friend who graduated from the University of North Carolina with a degree in creative writing that told me once "most authors are either crazy or alcoholics or crazy alcoholics". I took great offense to that as I don't drink and consider myself a little strange and unusual, but certainly not crazy. He, unfortunately, was a tortured soul and I could see him becoming both in the not-too-distant future. He could write, he could write very well, but there was something about him that just wasn't right.

Fitting All The Pieces Together: The Elements That Go Into A Great Story by Meredith Bond

Just about everyone has a story inside of them, but who is brave enough, determined and, possibly, stubborn enough to actually write it down? Quite a few start, but very quickly realize that theres a lot more to writing a novel than it seems, and give up after a chapter or two. We all read novels and enjoy them, getting caught up in the fun of the characters, the world or the plot. But when you actually sit down to write your own book well, thats when a potential author discovers whether theyve got what it takes to actually make it through to the end.

There are a good number of factors that go into writing a book youve got the few Ive mentioned already, characters, the world or setting, and the plot. But youve also got to consider point of view, dialogue, and how youre going to engage your reader in the story. And then there are those nitty-gritty details like how are you going to begin writing your story? Are you just going to sit down at your computer and stare at a blank page for a while until the words come to you? Or do you plan your story first plot out whats going to happen and when?

Writing Villains Readers Love to Hate by Beverley Eikli

        Published: February 4th, 2013  Views: 47

Villains come in many guises. They are not always warped human beings. Sometimes they are not even human at all, however they provide conflict in a story.

And conflict, of course, is what raises the stakes and keeps a reader turning the pages.

Not every book has an easily identifiable bad guy or anti-hero fulfilling that function. Author Janet Woods, who writes some of my favourite villains, reminds us that the conflict can take many forms. Sometimes the villain isnt human, but is landscape and poverty, she says. In (my book) Lady Lightfingers it was the slums of Victorian London. It kept dragging Celia back when she tried to escape.
