Things Look Different

Posted on 17 March 2012 - 10:45 PM

It used to be that this site would go through two or three designs in a year. That remained the case right up until, well when it didn't. I'm guessing about six years ago. I don't really care to check for any certainty as it could easily be longer and I'm not sure I want to know that.

In any case it's here and more or less done. Other than the forum which for now I'm leaving alone. I may give the Boxer sub site a new look first.

I should point out that this is only a new look nothing substantive has changed.

I'm sure it won't be to everyone's taste. I'm not even sure it's to mine though right now I like it better than the old design.

The stagnation that had set in wasn't unoticed. Numerous redesigns were created over the years but none of those went live. However it got to the point where I decided to put up what I last had, after some tweaks here and there. Change was needed even if it is only cosmetic.

I took advantage of the obscurity of the site to allow me to make some decisions regarding browser support which might otherwise have been difficult. It should look bug free (Yeah right?) and more or less the same in the newest versions of all major web browsers. At least all but IE where it looks OK but misses some bits and bobs of CSS goodness that the others do have.

Regarding IE, if you are using any version prior to IE9, you're not supported, sorry. Much of layout will be broken and much of the styling missing.

Some effort has been made to try and make things better for mobile/small-screen devices. My guess is it should work quite well in any smart phone (No not like a native app at all but pretty good for a web page.) but I have limited access to the multitude of smart phones out there for testing. Essentially the browser serves up different style sheets depending on screen width.

In any case here it is and if you want to complain or point something out, go right ahead and do so.

What, some content?

In something of a break from the time honoured tradition of bringing you absolutely nothing new or of value. Almost ever. It's with the greatest pleasure that I can announce the addition of one whole piece of new content today.

So without further drivel. I'd just like to thank perhaps our most prolific contributor Wallace for a fantastic new poem, To Be Loved. Go read it!

Forum Login Issues

Posted on 28 October 2010 - 06:45 PM

Wow two entries in two days.

This is just a quick note to apologise for any login issues you may have experienced with the message boards in the last day. The board software was upgraded yesterday evening and this seems to have inadvertently caused the problem.

All fixed now though..

Sensible or not

Just noticed how neglected the front page here is of entries and decided that I should post something, anything really, rather than leave it so.

So now that this is done perhaps you should go do something more useful instead. Perhaps visit the publishing powerhouse of rapid-fire journalism that is, Sensibilum. After all it's updated at least once a month.

Exceedingly Good Bandwidth Cakes

Posted on 01 January 2010 - 11:42 AM

Apologies for the downtime over part of New Years eve and the following morning folks.

This, as you would have noticed if you had visited at the time. Was due to exceeding our monthly bandwidth allocation. This was something of a surprise as that has never happened before and yet to all aparent evidence the site has never been more slow and unused.

So both surprising and confusing. What little investigation I've done seems to point to several search engine bots hammering the site, rather than "crawling" it, simultaneously.

It was also surprising given that I used to get email warnings when approaching anywhere near the limit and none arrived this time. I suspect that may be something to do with a backend change several months earlier.

In any case I am very sorry for any inconvenience (Though during New Year festivities this seems unlikely.) and will endeavour to prevent such an occurrence in future.
