Please join us on Tuesday, February 12th, when Burckhardt Rueffer will share his passion for localization, discuss localization obstacles and describe opportunities for improvement. This meeting will reduce your confusion when working on localization projects.
Much of the revenue in a global economy results from sales to diverse markets. US companies generate more than 60% of their revenue from sales abroad. Writing documentation in the native languages of these markets is a costly effort; but localization of technical writing is essential for a successful international product launch.
Burckhardt, who holds degrees in Computer Science, Graphic and Industrial Design, and Social Sciences grew up in Germany and the US. His background in visual and non-verbal communication allows him to understand the challenges of communication across cultural boundaries. His goal is to make information available to recipients regardless of the languages they speak or the places they live. In the 80's he was co-founder of one of the industry's first localization companies. Using the languages and images of local markets, he has helped clients like Microsoft, Intel, and Mitsubishi make their products available to world-wide audiences.
Burckhardt Rueffer is CEO of BeatBabel. He will be happy to speak with anyone about the challenges of localization. He may even share a few anecdotes of localization projects. Just ask him, and he might tell you a story....

Now Recruiting Senior Technical Communicators for the Chapter Mentoring Program Committee
The number one chat topic on the San Diego Technical Writer forum is a request to establish a mentorship program to assist technical communicators. San Diego STC has heard the call and is starting a mentoring program to assist those who are interested in learning more about the technical communication field or to assist those already in the field with obtaining jobs in the San Diego area.Mentorship provides a life-line to members that may be looking for new work or making a career change. They can provide experienced guidance to new entrants into the technical communication field. They can also provide inspiration to fuel committed long-term growth of the chapter, and can provide an outlet for senior members to become re-engaged with our society.
Before starting the mentoring, Jeff Freeman, Immediate Past President of the STC-SD, is conducting a task force meeting to establish the guidelines for our future chapter members.
We are looking for 3-4 senior technical communicators (they do not have to be current STC members) to participate in a short 90 minute meeting with Jeff to discuss the guidelines for our chapter mentoring program. If you are interested in being on this committee or learning more about this program, please contact Jeff at either the January or February STC meetings or e-mail him at Jeffstcsd@gmail.com .
Thanks for supporting our chapter in this worthwhile new program
