Bio

John Whitehead is a professor in the Department of Economics at Appalachian State University, arriving in Boone in 2004. He received his BA in economics from Centre College in 1985, his MA in economics in 1987 and his PhD in 1990, both latter degrees from the University of Kentucky. His previous employment includes East Carolina University (12 years) and UNC-Wilmington (3 years). His current teaching includes microeconomics and benefit-cost analysis. John's research interests include finding better ways to attach monetary values to environmental and natural resources for use in benefit-cost analyses (e.g., sea-level rise, recreational fishing). He is an Associate Editor at Marine Resource Economics and the Journal of Environmental Management. He is a member of the SSC (and Socioeconomic Panel) of the SAFMC. Previously he served on the Board of Directors of AERE and as president of the Socioeconomics Section of the AFS. He has been blogging at Environmental Economics since 2005. He is a member of the American Economic Association, Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, Association of Environmental and Resource Economists, North American Association of Fisheries Economists, North American Association of Sports Economists and the Southern Economic Association. He was presented with the 2008 Distinguished Economist Award by the Kentucky Economic Association and, perhaps most importantly, he was elected "Player with the Best Attitude" in the Noon-Time Faculty-Staff Basketball Game.
