New Intensive Course on Nuclear Disarmament

In addition to its continuing short course series on nuclear non-proliferation, the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP) will offer a new intensive course with an exclusive focus on nuclear disarmament issues. The course is intended for junior to mid-level diplomats and practitioners as well as university-level faculty and researchers. The inaugural intensive course on nuclear disarmament will be held at the VCDNP office in Vienna, Austria, on December 10-14, 2012.

Some of the topics to be addressed in the one-week program include: the development of nuclear programs, postures and strategies from the 1940s onward, the evolution of the nuclear arms control and disarmament regime with an emphasis on its main elements and instruments, current challenges and impediments to disarmament, and possible strategies and measures to facilitate further reductions and complete disarmament. The course will be taught by faculty and experts from the VCDNP and the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) as well as renowned international experts on this issue.

Participation in the course is free of charge. Special consideration will be given to participants from developing countries. A small number of stipends are available to assist selected applicants who are not based in Vienna and will need to travel from abroad. Respective decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

The deadline for applications is October 22, 2012, but parties are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Applications should include:

A curriculum vitae of the applicant;
A letter of interest;
An endorsement/nomination letter from the applicant's organization; and
A request for travel and/or accommodation support (if relevant).
