93XRT Welcomes // Winter Soulstice 2013
NICK WATERHOUSE
NUMERO GROUP DJs
  • $16 adv. - $18 day of - $130 VIP Tables for 2
  • Doors: 9PM / Show: 9PM
  • 18+
Everything about Nick Waterhouse started with a single 45. Nick Waterhouse, who signs his own name across a righteous and exhilarating part of American music with this debut LP, snapped together from sessions traded for rent money and desperate favors and succeeding through strange luck, particular personality and a vision that would not crack. When he made that first 45 by himself, he was hoping less to launch a musical career than to bury the possibility with dignity. In his suburban hometown, there’d never been music like this, and when he moved to the big city for school, no one could be bothered to care about music like this, so he recorded his song simply to prove that he could record his song.

That “Some Place” 45 on his own label Pres—put together with something barely more than a pick-up band of 20-something kids sold half its press in a single night in the winter of 2010, and so made itself known to the people who needed to know, in that quiet nighttime way certain records have done for decades.
By mid-2011, he was signed to a label and after three more swoops through engineer Mike McHugh’s studio the Distillery, where of course powerful spirits are made, he’d found Time’s All Gone.

An Evening with...
EMILIE AUTUMN

All Tickets for 10/31 Will Be Honored

  • $18 adv - $21 day of
  • Doors: 7PM / Show: 8PM
  • All Ages
World-class violinist. Fashion icon. Famously bipolar. The list goes on, but one thing is certain: We're talking about Emilie Autumn. With world tours, glossy magazine covers, and guest spots on the albums of such artists as Courtney Love (with whom she performed on Leno and Letterman), Otep, Billy Corgan, and TV's 'Metalocalypse' under her corset strings, Emilie Autumn's devilishly dark lyrics, metal-shredding violin solos, pink-glittered pasties, and industrial-strength voice reinvent "gothic" for the masses, and goths have never had so much fun.

More akin to a Broadway musical than a standard rock performance, the Los Angeles-born starlet's highly theatrical stage show is a sexy circus of glam-rock burlesque, backed by a scantily-clad girl band known to EA's devoted fans as the Bloody Crumpets. Featuring EA's signature electric violin pyrotechnics, heartbreakingly lush orchestrations, hard-core beats, and menacing lyrics growled with enough intensity to make your hair stand on end, the resulting noise is a harpsichord-heavy romp through Victorian asylums where screaming is allowed and girls always get revenge.

SOUL SUMMIT PRESENTS: FREE DANCE PARTY
with special guest
DJ AKALEPSE
(Truth & Soul Records, New York City)
  • FREE
  • Doors: 9PM / Show: 9PM
  • 21+
Soul Summit started as an idea in late 2009 after walking around the city and seeing numerous flyers for soul nights. An idea formed. Why not have one night with a delegate from each soul group/crew to celebrate the different types of early soul sounds currently being represented in the city? The idea sprang into action and soon we had three 'residents', Dave Matta, Duke Grip, and Sloppy White. With these three DJs at the core, we also included a rotating roster of guests each month. The original purpose was to challenge attendees with different sounds and to not have a solidified format. Most important, the night is not about the guests but above all the music. With no preference to 'rare' records but records aimed for the dance floor regardless of how rare or common. Soul Summit is not about a 'scene' or alienation. We encourage all people from walks of life to come listen and celebrate early soul music.

BLACK JOE LEWIS & THE HONEYBEARS
SOUL SUMMIT DJs
B.S. BRASS BAND
  • $21
  • Doors: 9PM / Show: 9PM
  • 18+
Growing up in Austin and Round Rock, Joe Lewis took it all in—Delta and Chicago blues, Memphis soul, Detroit garage punk—and what came out the other end was, and is, unlike anything else out there Joe Lewis brings it on his new album - all killer, no filler, the fittingly titled, take-no-prisoners Scandalous (Lost Highway)—once again produced by Jim Eno, moonlighting from his main gig as Spoon’s drummer—is a churning slab of rock & roll, blues and funk, laced with a double shot of 100-proof punkitude.

Like his forebears, Lewis writes from direct, often bitter experience with unflinching veracity. The songs of Scandalous are littered with the debris of age-old issues: hard times and one-night stands, lying and cheating, redemption and revenge. Gritty, raunchy and real, his music is not for the squeamish, but experiencing it fully can be genuinely cathartic.

Since his first offerings began making the Internet rounds in 2009, Toro Y Moi’s Chaz Bundick has proven himself to be not just a prolific musician, but a diverse one as well, letting each successive release broaden the scope of the his oeuvre. The funky psych-pop of 2011’s Underneath the Pine evinced an artist who could create similar atmospheres even without the aid of source material and drum machines. His Freaking Out EP, a handful of singles and remixes, and a retrospective box-set plot points all along the producer-songwriter spectrum in which he’s worked since his debut, and this year’s third full-length, Anything In Return, sees him poised directly in the middle of the two. Since then, Bundick has proven himself to be not just a prolific musician, but a diverse one as well, letting each successive release broaden the scope of the Toro Y Moi oeuvre.

Biz, the Iranian/American Emcee from Chicago who brings nothing but the hottest beats with a conscious flow, heads to Metro this winter! From the studio to shows, from rap battles to videos he’s headed for the top! This third album, “Back To Life,” was recently released. With production that ranges from east coast hip hop, to bass heavy electro. With features from artists like underground legend NoTryDo.Sincere and indie rocker Chris Fall of the Satellites, Back To Life transcends the barriers of all genres. The great KRS One put it best when he said they call it "Hip" because it's fresh, and "Hop" because it's a movement. Biz's music definitely fits that mold, yet manages to break the stereotypes at the same time. Most artists tend to focus on a few good songs and create "filler" for the rest of their project, but "Back To Life" – like all of Biz’s music – is 100% gold!

The Kuhls features the collaborative songwriting efforts of sisters Renee and Grace Kuhl, brought to life by their kickass monster-slaying, demon-defying rock band. Born and raised in Kansas, then transplanted to Chicago, the sisters enlist their friends in some explicit urban guitar slashing while unconsciously maintaining a firm grip on their churchy folk roots. The result are two diverse personalities and contexts amalgamated in a process of musical alchemy.

New York-born, San Francisco-based Aesop Rock (aka Ian Bavitz) is a critically acclaimed hip hop artist/producer, recognized for his dense and abstract word play. Between 1997-2007, he released five solo albums, three EPs, and a 45-minute piece of music designed for runners, commissioned by Nike. His lyrics have been published in the New York Times Best Seller Hip Hop Speaks to Children, by author/activist Professor Nikki Giovanni (Oct. 2008), as well as Yale University's Anthology of Rap (Nov. 2010). Aesop is also co-founder of 900bats.com, a creative resource of arts, information, and oddities.

Since the release of Aesop’s last solo album None Shall Pass (2007), Aesop toured the US extensively, as well as Australia, UK and Europe, returning to an eclectic mix of collaborations, landing him both behind the board and in front of the mic. He provided music for the short film Wallyball (Apr. 2008) for the McSweeney’s “Wholphin” short film series, scored the Ace Norton-directed short film Dewana's Bridal (Sep. 2009), produced the third installment of the Slug and Murs Felt series A Tribute to Rosie Perez (Nov. 2009), contributed both beats and vocals on Kimya Dawson's album Thunder Thighs (Oct. 2011), created music in collaboration with Jeremy Fish's “Ghosts of the Barbary Coast” art show in SF (2009), co-produced SF rock outfit Dirty Ghosts' debut album Metal Moon, (Feb. 2012), and started and recorded albums with two new groups – Hail Mary Mallon (with rapper Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz) and the Uncluded (with Kimya Dawson). Aesop also started his own imprint, Block Block Chop, which is now the home to his catalog.

His latest album, Skelethon, was released last July and marks the first entirely self-produced album for Aesop Rock, with additional instrumentation and back-up vocals from the likes of Allyson Baker (Dirty Ghosts), Hanni El Khatib, Nicky Fleming-Yaryan, Rob Sonic, and the Grimace Federation, as well as scratch performances provided by long-time friend and collaborator DJ Big Wiz.
