Gaetano Pesce
Born in La Spezia, Italy, in 1939, Gaetano Pesce is one of the most renowned architect-artist-designers working today – a revolutionary thinker/maker whose ingenious work over the last 44 years is considered not only seminal, but iconic. Mr. Pesce attended the School of architecture of Venice from 1958 to 1963, and thereafter has lived in Este, Padova, Venice, London, Helsinki, Paris, and, since 1980, New York City. His expansive career embodies diverse commissions in architecture, urban planning, interior and exhibition design, industrial design, and publishing. It is an unparalleled body of work, so unique and so resonant, as to defy comparison; the work of Gaetano Pesce is an oeuvre unto itself. Since its beginning in 1994, Moss has represented Pesce's work, launching, over ten years ago, the first collection of Fish Design, a revolutionary collection of bowls, trays, vases, jewelry, mirrors and clocks, created in gently pliant, vibrantly colored techno-resins by this visionary, fearless social poet. Moss has continuously presented limited-series pieces and/or one-off works of Pesce, as well as those rare examples of industrial collaboration, notably with Zerodisegno, Meritalia, and Fish Design, Italy. The result of a radical approach to production, "industrialized non-conformity", these uniquely individual objects emerge from a manufacturing process –sometimes called "diversified-series production" - which allows great variability in form and color. Standing firm against the intractable notion of the 'perfect form', and rejecting what Pesce refers to as the "the totalitarianism of sameness", these provocative, sensuous, joyful works celebrate curiosity, color, optimism, innovation, flexibility, and diversity, as well as embodying an underlying political dimension. The subject of numerous publications and exhibitions throughout the past five decades, Pesce's work is included in the permanent collections of most major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, and the Montreal Museum of Fine Art, as well as in important private collections. |
