Transgender Day of Remembrance will be observed at Austin City Hall at 6:30pm tonight.

According to TDOR organizers, more than one person per month has died due to transgender-based hate or prejudice over the last 10 years in North America. A report commissioned by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, found that one in four transgender people reported being physically assaulted and one in 10 reported being sexually assaulted because of their gender identity/expression.

The observation is intended to remember those who have lost their lives because of intolerance of their gender identity and expression. Communities around the world will take part in uniting to read the names of those who have died and share stories. The event is held on November 20th each year in honor of Rita Hester, whose 1998 murder inspired the “Remembering Our Dead” web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil.
