Getting Started

Welcome to the bitly API! If you're looking to shorten links, bundle links, or retrieve link-level or user-level analytics programmatically, you've come to the right place.

Looking for the API methods to utilize bitly's new "bitmarking" functionality? To save and edit links as bitmarks, check out the /v3/user/link_save and /v3/user/link_edit methods. To pull in bitmarks from an authenticated user's social networks, check out the /v3/user/network_history method.

If all you're looking to do is shorten links on behalf of a single user or site, you can call the bitly API's /v3/shorten method using your bitly login and API key, both of which you can find here.

If you are looking to work with multiple end-users, or to pull any information on a user level for your own account (including link history, bundle history, and/or analytics), you'll need to register an application with us to authenticate with our API.

Once you've registered an app with us, you can check out some libraries and tools for interacting with the bitly API via a number of popular programming languages, or proceed to the API documentation directly.

If you're looking for some help getting started with the bitly API, feel free to reach out to the API developer community with any questions!
