Enter the Grand Designs Awards
We’re looking for homeowners who’ve completed a project, whether it’s new-build or renovation. You don’t have to be an architect or a designer (although they’re welcome too); it's open to all and free to enter. Photo credit: Jefferson Smith

Keeping buzzy
The British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) gets a plug from me this month, not for any great invention, but because it constantly champions beekeeping (a third of the food we eat depends on pollination) and compiles a range of information that acts as a sort of pollination early-warning system for agriculture

I'm reading...
Three green cheers for the Old House Eco Handbook by Roger Hunt and Marianne Suhr, in association with The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. It mixes an erudite analysis of building science with practical advice and demonstrations of best practice.

My house of the month
This small, lozenge-shaped build on the coast of Skye by Rural Design is possibly my favourite Grand Designs project we’ve ever filmed. Alan Dickson and his team designed an exquisite timber-clad home, unlike anything else on Skye, which resembles a moss-covered boulder.

The green deal
Collectively, the buildings we live in are responsible for around 26 per cent of Britain's carbon emissions, and so the government launched the Green Deal to help homeowners efficiently insulate and draftproof their homes

My green hero of the month
This month it's Hendzel + Hunt, a London-based furniture maker. Their stuff is beautifully made as opposed to hurriedly remade creating new identities for old pieces of timber like this Kirkwood chair.

Specialist designer and scavenger
Paul Firbank helped us design and create the amazing chair on the front porch. He also has a shop if you'd like your own piece of the industrial era.

House of the month
This goes to the crystalline series of stepped boxes in Brixton, built by the intrepid architect Carl Turner. It goes to show that eco does not have to be hairy, nor even vaguely crinkly. It can actually be smooth, polished and even a bit bling.
