By hossman
October 12, 2012
Today, the Apache Software Foundation officially announced the release of Apache Solr 4.0.0 and Apache Lucene 4.0.0. An annotated version of the “Release Highlights” can be found below.
The Significance of 4.0.0
These 4.0.0 releases are over 2 years in the making, and represent the first truly “Revolutionary Release” from the Lucene project, compared to most of the “Evolutionary” X.0 releases in the past. To mark the occasion, I thought it would be …

Lucene/Solr 4.0-ALPHA – What’s In A Name?
By hossman
July 3, 2012
Lucene & Solr 4.0-ALPHA were released on July 3, 2012. This is a huge milestone for the project, and the culmination of an idea that was spawned 2 years ago with the creation of the 4x branch. I’ve included the highlights from the release announcements below, but that’s not really the point of this post. What I’d really like to talk about today is why this release is called an “ALPHA”, and what it means …

Once a Chump, Always a Chump
By hossman
April 26, 2012
The first time I ever presented at an “International Tech Conference” was ApacheCon 2006 in Austin TX. Even though there were probably only ~200 people in the world who knew what Solr was at that point, and only ~20 people in the room that day, it was a very big deal for me. It was the first of many presentations I have given over the years where I practiced, and honed, and rehearsed, for many …

14 Ways to Contribute to Solr without Being a Programming Genius or a Rock Star
By hossman
March 26, 2012
Last week, the venerable Andy Lester posted his “14 Ways to Contribute to Open Source without Being a Programming Genius or a Rock Star“. It’s a great list, and I highly encourage anyone with an interest in Open Source to read it — but I thought It might be particularly helpful for the readers of this blog to mention how each of these points apply to Solr.
