With spring in the air it’s time for families to get outdoors, get active, and play together! Growing up, my brother and I would always see one or both of my parents working out. Whether it was going for a run, a long walk, the gym, or in the winter, heading to the swimming pool at the local YMCA, my parents made fitness a priority in their lives.
My mom has always been thin, but she never thought that she didn’t have to work out. Actually, she always attributed her slender size to her long walks. Even when she was diagnosed with arthritis in her hands and feet about 20 years ago, she didn’t let her diagnosis cause her to stop working out. Instead, she adapted her workouts accordingly. Instead of running, she walked. Then she signed up for swimming classes at the gym, or would do non-impact classes at the gym.
And my dad, he’s always been a runner. Even in his late 50s, my dad would run five to ten miles without a problem. When I was in grade school I would sometimes go to the track to watch my dad run. In high school, I sometimes ran with him. Then in college, my dad and I would run together when I came home for visits. Now, when I take the kids to visit my parents (they live half way across the country), I always pack my work out clothes because I expect to go to the gym with my mom and/or dad.
I’m grateful to my parents for modeling the importance of an active lifestyle. I know that being healthy means staying physically active. I’ve learned that exercise has to be something that you continuously do in your life, not just at the start of the New Year or when you want to lose some weight, but on a regular basis. My kids know that we are not going to be couch potatoes. We get up, we get out, and we stay active. I usually take the kids to the gym with me. Sometimes we go for long walks, family bike rides, or the kids ride their bikes while mommy and daddy run. Our favorite outdoor activity? Fishing! And everyone has their own fishing pole; a princess one for my six year old daughter, Spider Man for my five year old son, and a plain blue one for my nine year old. We all know how to cast out our lines, bait our hooks, and what it means when the tide is low. If you haven’t given fishing a try yet, go for it! You can pack a lunch, bring some music, and enjoy the beautiful weather.
