Titans Fall to Storm

02/10/2013 11:24

spacer Lane Lady Titans looked to rebound from their poor shooting performance last Wednesday at Linn-Benton but found no relief at home losing 67-63 to the Chemeketa Storm.  The Titans, once again, shot poorly from the field (32%), 3-point line (13%) and free throw line (50%) in the loss.  All percentages are below their season averages.

Lane rallied from a 13 point margin in the first half with a late surge and were only down by 8 at the half, but Chemeketa came out of the break and pushed the margin to 12 points within five minutes.  The Titans behind the rebounding, scoring and defending of Megan Shields (Sherwood, OR.) crept back in the game and cut the margin to 2 points with 3 minutes to go.  However, two missed layups and three more missed 3-point shots doomed the Titans fate.

Shields led the squad in points with 15, rebounding with 14 and blocked shots with 4. Nicole Hannifan (Milwaukee, OR.) had 13 pts, Danielle Schmidt (Hillsboro, OR.) had 11 pts and 7 rebounds, Jordan Wilcox (Prineville, OR.) had 8 pts and 5 rebounds and Courtney Walchli (Hermiston, OR.) had 6 pts and 6 carons for the Titans.

Hannah Frederick lead the Storm with a game high 18 pts and McKenzi Benedict had 12 rebounds for Chemeketa.

The Titans (22-2, 8-2) hope to get back in the win column Wednesday night when they visit Southwestern Oregon CC in a 5:30 game.  The Titans still ranked # 1 in the NWAACC and still with the overall best record are two games behind league-leading Clackamas (20-3, 10-0) in the Southern Region.

Titans Sweep Roadrunners

02/08/2013 07:18

spacer Lane Lady Titans swept the season series with the Linn-Benton Roadrunners with their 68-41 victory Wednesday at Linn-Benton.  The Titans struggled offensively throughout the game shooting a dismal 30% from the field and only 12.5% from behind the arc.  They, however, made up for the poor shooting by dominating the backboards with 68 rebounds with eight players collecting at least five boards each.  Nicole Hannifan (Milwaukee, OR.) led the rebounding parade with 10 caroms, Courtney Walchli (Hermiston, OR.) and Megan Shields (Sherwood, OR.) pulled down 7 rebounds each.  Renee Lucero (Stanwood, WA.), Maddy Moore (San Ramon, CA.), Simone Thompson (Gardena, CA.), Jordan Wilcox (Prineville, OR.) and Tori Mahaffie (Eugene, OR.) each had five rebounds in the win.

Moore and Thompson led Lane in scoring with 10 points each, Mahaffie and Lucero were next with 8 points.  Ayla Rodriguez had a game high 12 points for the Roadrunners.

The win for the Lane Titans (22-1, 8-1) helped them keep within one game of  league leading Clackamas going into Saturday's 2:00pm matchup with third place Chemeketa CC.  The game is the Titans 6th Annual “Jam the Gym” day with admission free with canned donation to Food for Lane County or a donation to the Kay Yow Foundation for breast cancer research.  The first 500 spectators receive a free t-shirt from the Bi-Mart.

Lane's Elias Gedyon named 2012 Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Year

By John William Howard for NWAACC.org

For Elias Gedyon, cross country and track athlete at Lane Community College, the move from home to college life was a big jump. Seeing as the move was from downtown Los Angeles, it's easy to imagine how different it would be transitioning to Eugene, Ore., whose damp, but picturesque hills and oak forests paint a much different picture than the sun, concrete and high rises of southern California. Scene didn't seem to make much difference, as Gedyon did what he set out for, winning the NWAACC men's cross country championship. For his efforts individually, and his part in a second place finish for Lane, Gedyon was named the 2012 Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Year.

This, however, isn't the largest stage that Gedyon has been on. A star in high school, Gedyon was twice selected to compete as part of the USA team at the World Junior Track and Field Championships. Gedyon also finished second in the Nike Cross Nationals in 2009, and second in the 1500 meter run at the 2011 Nike Track Nationals, where he helped his team to win the men's national title.

"He's very, very talented. He's an untapped talent," said Mike Blackmore, first-year cross country coach at Lane. "Mentally, he wants to be really good. He wants to move on to the next level, and like every other kid, he wants to be on an Olympic team."

Blackmore said that while Gedyon hasn't talked specifically about the Olympics, he has mentioned a desire to qualify for the US Championships, and according to Blackmore, both the qualifying for and making the Olympic team are something that Gedyon is capable of achieving somewhere down the line.

Gedyon will remain at Lane for one more season before a potential transfer to Oregon, but Blackmore said that he seems to already be friends with several of the athletes from the Oregon team.

"He seems to really like it here," said Blackmore, who has heard Gedyon talk of the trails and the open space.

This spring, Gedyon will be redshirting for the track season in preparation for the fall, and to save three seasons of competition for the next level. Even though his future is somewhat set, Blackmore says that Gedyon's focus still seems to be on the here and now.

"I think, in his mind, whatever the competition is, he's here to do his best," said Blackmore. "If that means winning the 1500 by a tenth of a second, or winning the cross country championship by the eight seconds he won it by, he's here to take care of business."

Mahaffie Leads Titans to Big Win

02/04/2013 00:05

spacer Freshman Tori Mahaffie (Eugene, OR.) making her first start of the season scored 14 pts, including 4-for-6 from the three-point line, and led the Lane Titans (21-1, 7-1 South Region) to an 83-39 win over the Mt. Hood CC Saints.  The Titans began the game by racing to a 8-0 lead, then extended the margin throughout the half and finished with a 31 pt lead, 51-20.

Mahaffie led four Titans in double figures for the game including Madison Moore (San Ramon, CA.) and Jordan Wilcox (Prineville, OR.) who had 11 pts each and Megan Shields (Sherwood, OR.) who had 10 pts.  The Titans also dominated the boards, outrebounding the Saints 61-28.  Nicole Hannifan (Milwaukee, OR.) collected 10 boards to lead the team, Shields followed with 9 caroms, Danielle Schmidt (Hillsboro, OR.) was next with 7 rebounds then Mahaffie and Courtney Walchli (Hermiston, OR.) had 6 each.

The Titans pursue South Region leaders Clackamas next Wednesday when they travel to Linn-Benton CC to battle the Roadrunners at 5:30pm.  The Titans defeated the Roadrunners earlier this season 85-60.

Lane returns home next Saturday, Feb. 9th, when they play Chemeketa CC in their  6th Annual "Jam the Gym" night in support of breast cancer research.  Admission is free with a request to bring cans of food for Food for Lane County.  The first 500 fans receive a free t-shirt donated by the Bi-Mart Corporation. The women's game begins at 2:00pm with the men's game following at 4:00pm.
