Danielle Krysa
The Art of Confidence
Palm Springs, California, USA
October 20 - 23, 2011
Join Danielle Krysa, aka The Jealous Curator for a 2 day workshop/inspiration, rock your socks off Ace Camp in Palm Springs, California. WooHoo! Oh, yes, the ultimo mid century modern city of the U.S.A.
Danielle let's talk about the workshop...
Where did the idea for this workshop come from?
I normally do daily posts on “The Jealous Curator” about an artist's work that makes me “jealous" (in a good way of course!), but this spring I wrote a different kind of post. It was about feeling alone as an artist, and equating your sales with your self-worth. Well, my readers out did themselves! The response to it was overwhelming, with the comments being so thoughtful, emotional and totally empathetic… because as artists, we’ve all been there, right? As I was responding to the comments, I realized that I'd love to actually meet these people, talk about those artsy issues that bring us all down, turn them around and leave all of us feeling positive, productive and most importantly, no longer alone.
Who is this workshop suited for?
Anyone who loves making things, but occasionally finds themselves doubting their talents… so pretty much every artist in the world!

What can you expect to learn?
You’ll learn that you’re not alone, how to turn jealousy or insecurity into something positive, and how to move forward with your work. Personally, I have a huge fear of perfect white canvases because I “don’t want to ruin them”, so we won’t even touch one! In fact, we won’t even use new sketchbooks, instead we’ll use old 25c cookbooks as sketchbooks. Slap a little house paint over the recipes and create your work there. If you don’t like it you can tear it out and move on... guilt free! We’ll go to a few local Palm Springs thrift shops to collect bits and pieces to add to our mixed media sketchbooks. We’ll be doing a few jealousy-shattering exercises that will serve as inspiration! Oh, and you may even learn a few relaxing pilates moves by the pool each morning before breakfast… if you’re awake!
Why should one sign up?
Community is so important for creative people. You can spend an entire career working alone in your studio, but if you have a network of like-minded people to reach out to whenever you need it, you (and your work), will be so much better off! Plus, it’s Palm Springs in October… do I need to say more?!

How will this experience improve your creative life?
You will know that you are not the only artist in the world that occasionally has self-doubt. You will know how to stop those thoughts in their tracks, and move past them. You will have a group of at least 10 people that you can email, call or visit with that will know exactly how you’re feeling. We all need that.
Where we're staying: The accommodations have been featured in The New York Times as an example of the quintessential indoor-outdoor Palm Springs style home, and features modernist furnishings by iconic 20th century designers including Charles Eames and George Nelson.
"There is one moment, when you look at a piece of art and know that you love it. It’s the moment when you feel a rush of uplifting inspiration - and total soul-crushing jealousy all at the same time. It’s when you walk away thinking, ‘Damn, I wish I thought of that.’"
Danielle Krysa, aka The Jealous Curator, has a BFA in Visual Arts, and a post-grad diploma in Interactive Design. She has worked as a designer and Creative Director for almost fifteen years, but has never stopped loving, and creating, fine art. After years of secretly thinking "Damn, I wish I thought of that", she finally decided to say it out loud, and in February of 2009 “The Jealous Curator” was born. The blog features the work of emerging contemporary artists from a variety of disciplines… the only requirement is that they make her feel like she’s been punched in the creative gut. Danielle also writes art columns for several other blogs (sfgirlbybay, ecofabulous, Escape Into Life), and has written guests post for Etsy, and eBay's blog "The Inside Source". In early 2011 she had the great pleasure of speaking at Alt Summit in Salt Lake City, and a month later her jealous curation started making it's way from the blogosphere, to the white walls of actual galleries. The first show opened in Washington DC, with a second show opening a few months later in Vancouver. What's next? She has no idea... and could not be more excited!
