It looks likely that Black Friday will propel tablets past notebooks in the U.S. for the first time, according to the latest report from NPD DisplaySearch that tracks North American shipments.
The forecast expects shipments of 21.5 million tablets in the last quarter of 2012, leaving notebooks and mini-notes lagging far behind at 14.6 million.
According to NPD DisplaySearch, worldwide tablet shipments will not cross that milestone until 2015, when it expects 275.9 million tablets and 270 million notebooks. And the trend will continue.
The analysts cited several factors behind this trend. For one thing, 70 percent of U.S. households already have a keyboard-type computer. For another, Google and Amazon are putting their considerable marketing weight and comprehensive reach behind tablet adoption. Thirdly, consumers are demonstrating a preference for tablets over notebooks.
