Northern Rio Grande STEM Collaborative

The Northern Rio Grande STEM Collaborative is providing high quality STEM education by sharing information, expertise and resources among the four public Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) in northern New Mexico.

Northern is the lead institution for this collaborative project, with two-year colleges of Santa Fe Community College (SFCC), University of New Mexico branch campuses at Taos (UNM-Taos) and Los Alamos (UNM-LA) as partners. This partnership will increase the number of students attaining degrees in STEM fields by establishing new labs, new research capacities, new STEM majors, new faculty positions, new faculty development programs, effective transfer agreements, improved distance education capabilities, and improved student advising.

UNM-LA

UNM-Los Alamos is a branch of The University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, the largest four-year university in New Mexico. The UNM-LA branch campus is located in Los Alamos, a community that is home to the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

UNM-Los Alamos offers a number of outstanding programs and services to meet a variety of student needs and interests. They offer 14 certificate programs and 18 associate degree programs; community education and customized training courses; small business development seminars through the Small Business Development Centers (Los Alamos and Sandoval Counties); Adult Basic Education programs including General Education Development (GED) and English Language Learners (ESL); and bachelor and graduate degree programs through UNM's Distance Education Program.

UNM-Los Alamos has strong ties to the Albuquerque campus and many students come here to complete the first two years of a four year degree. UNM-LA's course offerings enable students to complete general education requirements, specifically, those that satisfy the UNM Core Curriculum.  UNM-Los Alamos also hosts a large population of students who take an evening class in a subject of their interest, or attend one of the many community education classes to brush up on a skill or learn a new one. UNM-Los Alamos has partnership programs with LANL, including Computer Training, and a program through which students may work at LANL while completing a certificate or associate degree at UNM-LA.

UNM-Los Alamos is known for its small classes and dedicated instructors and staff. With an average class size of 10 students, UNM-LA offers the type of hands-on learning usually available only at a private liberal arts college for a bargain community college price.

UNM-Taos

The UNM-Taos branch campus serves students from northern New Mexico and the larger community with comprehensive educational opportunities in order to better prepare them to successfully participate in the world as educated, skilled, creative and responsible individuals. The Taos Campus is an open-access, student-centered, affordable college offering dual-credit, basic skills, transfer, career-technical, workforce training and lifelong learning courses and programs. 

The goals that have been identified to fulfill the mission of UNM-Taos are:

  to provide a high-quality learning environment for all students;
• 
  to provide a wide range of academic programs culminating in the awarding of Associate degrees;
• 
  to provide a wide range of career technical programs culminating in certificates and degrees for students who seek career-related employment in business, industry, and government and health care;
• 
  to provide a transfer program to include a wide range of general education and pre-professional courses which normally articulate with Baccalaureate degree-granting colleges and the universities;
• 
  to provide a diversified program of academic,  and career technical courses to allow for the achievement of individual educational goals involving professional or technical skills development, professional rectification and/or personal interest;
• 
  to provide noncredit continuing adult education services to the community in the areas of business/professional training, personal development, cultural enrichment, and recreational activities;
• 
  to provide developmental education courses to acquire the basic verbal, quantitative, and cognitive skills necessary for a student’s successful transition into college-level study; and
• 
  to provide an array of student support services that include faculty and staff academic advisement and career counseling, diagnostic and placement testing, financial aid, and human development opportunities readily accessible to all students

SFCC

Santa Fe Community College is responsible for providing the region with affordable high quality education and training. Presented through a variety of delivery methods and time formats, this includes basic skill programs; certificates and technical degrees; associate degrees with four year transfer potential, and personal enrichment courses both for credit and not for credit. These offerings are designed to add value to the lives of our community members by broadening opportunities; enhancing personal income; improving working and living conditions; and fostering richer, healthier lives. The College also responds to the economic and workforce needs of the community by quickly and flexibly providing essential training, especially in emerging technologies.

As a public institution, SFCC is responsible to the taxpayers of the state of New Mexico and the taxing district of Santa Fe, as well as to its students, faculty, and staff, all of whom support it through their tax dollars, tuition dollars, and labor. It is incumbent upon the College to use its resources efficiently and effectively.
