Outdoor Adventure Market Grows, Despite Recession

Great article in Skift today about the outdoor adventure gear market.

…despite being huge at around $300 billion in U.S. alone, [the outdoor adventure gear industry] has been under the radar in mainstream consciousness, and yet growing at 5 percent a year even during recessionary times.

Although these figures relate specifically to gear industry growth - the trend also suggests an increase in demand for products and services that provide real world experiences - even as purchasing power decreases in hard economic times.

Folks aren’t buying sleeping bags and skis to hang on the wall. These folks are looking to get out, travel and explore.

You have to make a choice in life. You can avoid the things that make you uncomfortable, follow the pack and lead a very comfortable, normal existence. Or you can refuse to be limited by the things that challenge you and keep facing them until you crush them

You have to do unscalable things to become scalable

Per Airbnb’s Co-Founder, Joe Gebbia.

LESSON: In the early days of your company, don’t be afraid to do things that may not scale - like detailed customer development and conversations. It’s vital to building something that people will actually buy, at scale.
