MeeGo Handset Project Day 1 is Here

Submitted by valhalla on 30 June, 2010 - 07:10

spacer The MeeGo project is happy to announce "Day 1" of the MeeGo Handset user experience project. Many of you will remember this "Day 1" concept from March, when we first made the MeeGo core OS source code available and started development towards the MeeGo 1.0 release. Today, the handset baseline source code is available to the development community. This code is being actively developed as MeeGo 1.1, which is scheduled for release in October. The team has been preparing MeeGo Gitorious with all the sources and infrastructure to perform the weekly builds for MeeGo 1.1 development. The MeeGo UI team has also been busy creating the handset reference user experience and preparing the MeeGo UI design principles and interaction guidelines. This milestone marks the completion of the merger of Moblin and Maemo as major architecture decisions and technical selections have been determined. Today, we are also opening the MeeGo Build Infrastructure.

The MeeGo Project Handset Day 1 includes:

  • MeeGo APIs, incorporating Qt and MeeGo Touch UI Framework (MTF)
  • Subset of the handset reference UI and applications
    • Status Bar: clock, network, Bluetooth, 3G connection, notifications, and battery charge
    • Home Screen
    • Lock Screen
    • Application Launcher
    • Virtual Keyboard
    • Applications: Dialer, SMS, Browser, Contacts, and Photo Viewer
  • MeeGo Core OS (including the middleware components)
  • Hardware adaptation support for Intel Atom-based handset (Moorestown) and ARM-based Nokia N900

spacer

See it for yourself--check out the cool UI Handset Day 1 screenshots and video. Or better yet, try it out on a device for yourself by downloading a developer preview image or browse the source code. The MeeGo Handset Day 1 image is provided as a community developer preview and we are in a very early and active development state. While we don't recommend installing it on your primary phone just yet, we invite all developers who are interested to have an early look using a development device.

More details are in the Handset Day 1 release notes.

Severe PR1.2 camera bug known since May2010 not solved in PR1.3?

Submitted by Kyros on 14 October, 2010 - 04:40.

It seems that a severe PR1.2 camera bug known will not be solved in PR1.3 !
https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10384

With manual ISO settings the camera errors unworkable when you touch exposure correction.
Thus the whole advanced feature set of manual ISO settings and exposure correction is not accessible.

But obviously no one @ Nokia cares for fixing!
It's a pity that although such an important Bug is reported and tracked correctly by users there was no proper bug fixing made by Nokia.

The Bug today still has the same initial NEW status it had when it was created - even after 5 months!
I seems that N900 users shall be putted off with statements of "outside our reference" and unclear competency.

MeeGo Handset on Netbook

Submitted by jaxyeh on 25 August, 2010 - 13:18.

I am very interested into MeeGo Handset SDK, I was wondering if I am able to install the MeeGo Handset OS (Not the Netbook release) on TouchScreen netbook devices for prototyping and developing purpose??

Today we saw a new video about Nokia's Meego, it seems they are adopting alot from Maemo, thanks Nokia.
I was realy frustrated from the Meego Handset release, but now I releifed after seeing this Nokia-Meego.

Nokia, please open this new GUI for community development, so to keep with the Meego Project outlines.

what we want

Submitted by youmeego on 29 July, 2010 - 20:50.

we want meego to be unique among other operating system! Why not build meego gui on maemo5 and simplify maemo5 gui? Or make a smaller version of tablet meego! Look at the ipad and iphone

Meego GUI

Submitted by fasza2 on 29 July, 2010 - 20:34.

I agree with most of the people here about the GUI. Maemo is simpler and for most people might be better, however I think a 3D version of the Maemo GUI would rock. Anyway looking forward for MeeGo whatever may it be, but please try to make it differ Apple's and Google's OS, because I need an alternative. :P

Maemo 6 UI

Great job !

I have installed Meego Netbook on my eeePC901 and it rock's ! Terribly fast to start. Some regrets somewhat that's there is no mPlayer or VLC in the garage to watch movies not encoded with ogg.
Some words on Meego Handset: Great starting project. I'm not agree with the others whowant's UI funnier or totally diffrent than Android or iOS. These UI are usefull to adopt them in Meego, the most important thing is that the project is opensource and anybody can adapt it or modify it to its needs. With iOS you can't, and Google isn't fait enough to let people know that is Android is Linux based !
I'm really waiting for Meego Handset to switch to a truely opensource mobile phone device :)

Emulator?

Submitted by vkelman on 12 July, 2010 - 12:45.

Is there (Windows) desktop emulator for MeeGo allowing to learn writing MeeGo apps without buying an expensive Nokia phone?

Try MeeGo Netbook

Submitted by Sarmad on 26 July, 2010 - 11:18.

MeeGo core is the same across all versions, so you can learn on the netbook version for now. The SDK already has a simulator for the netbook version (as far as I could tell from quickly browsing this site). However, you'll need to run that on Linux rather than Windows, which shouldn't be a big deal anyway.

Meego is damn cool man ...

Submitted by himanshu99meego on 10 July, 2010 - 10:47.

Meego is definitely in early stages of development but its showing great results just as the Android vs Meego JS test , the Meego is definately going to bring in a great revolution of Meego development
I just downloaded the developer preview image

Meego UI Brainstorm

Submitted by youmeego on 10 July, 2010 - 01:19.

1. Make the height of Bottom Bar to as minimum as possible!
2. Fill the application menu with as many icons as possible 4x4 5x5...
3. Consider using press button instead of icons in the bottom bar
4. The App Menu icon: press again to close the app menu
5. Hope there is no physical buttons are needed on the front to operate the Meego, hence it is good for phone design
6. Need some talented graphics designers to design icons and theme
7. Gestures
Flick vertically to hide the switcher, and take us to Widget Space(multiple Widget Desktops)
and if we flick vertical again bring back the switcher
8. Think Switcher as a top layer above the Widget Space.
9. when in landscape mode, the Bottom Bar should be filled with more icons

Hardware

Submitted by messager on 9 July, 2010 - 10:36.

Hello !

I read articles about MeeGo, but I wonder on which phone I could install the OS. Will MeeGo come with specific hardware, like the Neo Freerunner ?

N900 I assume

Submitted by Sarmad on 26 July, 2010 - 11:01.

You should be able to install it on an N900 I assume.

The spec includes multitasking

Submitted by buurmas on 6 July, 2010 - 12:07.

I don't understand way some are claiming there is no multitasking. The UI design guidelines:

meego.com/developers/ui-design-guidelines/handset/meego-basics

...say:

"Switcher
"Users will often want to (or have to) use more than one application at a time, such as listening to music while writing a message. This is known as multitasking, and the switcher is an area where multiple tasks are managed."

If this behavior is not present in the released image, then I would assume that it hasn't been implemented yet. I highly doubt any vendor is going to release a MeeGo handset without multitasking.

Re: the app launcher grid, I do like the Maemo approach of having a traditional desktop and tapping a button to access a menu apps. It fits with the idea of "computer in your pocket first, cell phone second". I like the idea of instant access to desktop apps like weather or web search or RSS updates and non-instant access to everything else. But the grid UI is probably what non-Maemo users are used to, so it's probably a safer choice for a device with mass market hopes. Also, once you start opening apps on top of a desktop, the desktop is covered anyway, so you have to switch to the desktop to get at the desktop apps. So losing the desktop in favor of the grid doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

Moblin -> MeeGo

Submitted by 3rp3 on 6 July, 2010 - 02:35.

I also wonder why the Moblin UI is kept in MeeGo netbook UI, but Maemo UI isn't brought into MeeGo handset UI...

UI could be better...

Submitted by sanjoealex on 6 July, 2010 - 02:02.

Its a gud work... but i agree to others who are saying that the UI is not a fresh...its something like a iAndroid... boring...!! u need to bring out new ideas...

But.. whatever be the UI..
==>> power management should be emphasized... This is something Android forgot about.. we dont want a nokia device to starve for power within one day... <<==

iWebDroid 7

Submitted by 3rp3 on 6 July, 2010 - 00:02.

Like somebody said on engagdet discussion: iWebDroid 7. MeeGo looks like mix of all other mobile OS's. I think MeeGo is better than others anyway, but Maemo UI is the best. We don't need that bottom bar, if we have Maemo-like launcher in top bar and our favourite shortcuts on desktop.

Where's Maemo multitasking?

Submitted by denywinarto on 5 July, 2010 - 21:30.

I'm personally a bit dissapointed,
Multitasking is the main reason i chose N900 over other phones..

Maemo 5 is definitely the best handset OS in terms of multitasking,
Even though it's lacking some basic functions you see on other phones..

And i was hoping Meego could fix the disadvantages of Maemo 5,
BUT still retain its advantages..
Because i have faith in Meego Device and i'm definitely gonna buy one someday..
But with this UI?
What makes me and other consumers choose this?
when there's a bunch of Android devices out there with similar UI?

It's still beta i know,
that's why i hope you guys change your mind..
This is supposed to be Maemo/Moblin hybrid...
Not Android/IOS Hybrid :(

That's a real disappointment

Submitted by scaramanga89 on 5 July, 2010 - 13:01.

The last major chance of a decent alternative OS other than Android or iOS and it looks like both of them. Can anyone look beyond a damn 4x3 grid? Terrible. What's wrong with the tablet UI? It's fluid and intuitive. This is supposed to be released on a device with a 4" screen? The tablet UI would work beautifully on that.
If they don't get this right then I either have to stick with Maemo 5 or hope that HP come up with something great from Palm. Bummer.

Ukraine looks forward to

Maemo UI!

Submitted by 3rp3 on 6 July, 2010 - 00:03.

I agree with those who think this new MeeGo UI is too much like Android and iOS. Maemo UI is so simple but powerful. I would expect only some graphic improvements, for example Maemo's virtual keyboard isn't so cool. And desktop menu should be on top bar in desktop view. img340.imageshack.us/i/topbards.jpg/

Multitasking is also worse in MeeGo because (if I understood it right) it works on dektop, so you don't have access to widgets, shortcuts etc. if you have apps running.

I hope you listen to the community because it's the way linux works best. I'm sure people will be interested in different looking but simpler and better UI than Android's with it's many physical buttons and iOS' with it's limits.

why not just add to something already great...................

Submitted by james Robinson II on 5 July, 2010 - 05:39.

I watched avatar this weekend and half way threw the movie(cant believe i stayed that long) i thought about the meego. This movie is a prime example of making things harder then what they are, instead of just adding things to an already good an successful cartoon this fool changed the whole makeup of what made it a great show. The personalities of the characters were the total opposite from what they were supposed to be and the acting was poor. There have been countless examples of adaptions from cartoon or anime to real live action. Which leads me to this question, what is it that makes people think by changing the maemo 5 which i love to the opposite of what it is. The reason i chose the nokia n900 (besides the phone having so many great features) was because it was different an on to something great i never thought it would take a step back and look like android or the iphone. So im pleading with you guys because i think nokia was going in the right direction to not be so hard headed an move forward to something different and not the same old thing. I already hear that in todays music but only the ones who aren't afraid to be different stand out like eminem, ludacris hell even soulja boy and he sucks. So if you don't want to be disappointed like the maker of avatar the last Airbender when he thought he was going to make a killing at the box office ..........................................no going backwards

Boring UI compared to tablet UI

Submitted by Abhi on 4 July, 2010 - 11:01.

Hi,

I am not really expecting such a dump UI for mobile... I do not thing any user will be interested in buying a mobile with such a UI.

Where is the creativeness of the Nokia and Intel people.. You are just trying to copy what google and apple are doing.

true

Submitted by oho on 5 July, 2010 - 00:49.

True, the UI is so done before, nothing creative, nothing attractive. Yes it more eye-candy than Symbian, but it's not that creative.

Dissapointed....but opinions may change as time goes by

Submitted by blinxwang on 2 July, 2010 - 21:10.

Dear Meego (handset) team,

As much as I love what you are doing to port an open source, free Linux-based OS to the smartphone, netbook, and tablet platforms (some of the most popular and rapidly growing platforms), I have to be brutally honest that I am, on the whole, disappointed with the utter lack of innovation and creativity put into the development of the UI of this early release of Meego for Handsets (DISCLAIMER: If you (hopefully) take my suggestions and constructive criticism into consideration, then my opinions will change).

First off, I think (and I'm sure many people will agree) that the current UI is much too similar to the UIs of the iOS and Android platforms. You could call it a sort of a fusion between the two. I could go on to great lengths on how each feature compares to the features of Android and iOS, but the general idea is that it adopts the classic "home-screen" look and feel of iOS and Android; status bar and lock screen included. Also, some, if not a majority, of the application icons look similar to that of the two aforementioned platforms. Where has all the originality and creativity that is supposed to represent the free-spirited minds of the FOSS community gone? I was expecting something innovative like the UI of the netbook version of MeeGo, or something like that.

Secondly, I think that the use of an "app store" in a mobile OS is very overused and, quite frankly, cliche. Why not go for the more classic "package manager" style used in conventional Linux distributions? The use of software repositories is really not that hard for an end-user to learn and use. This style of software management has already been very successful in the case of Cydia, the de facto standard software management tool used in jailbroken iPhones.

If these points will pose problems to the usability of MeeGo for handsets, I highly suggest implementing a simple setup wizard the first time a user powers on their MeeGo handset which asks them what type of user they are, and how advanced they want the UI to be. For example, a developer/hacker who owns a MeeGo device would have easy access to all the advanced features of MeeGo, while a end-user would just have a simple but creative UI and a easy-to-use traditional-style package manager.

Thank you for taking the time to read my open letter addressing my main concerns about this early release of MeeGo for handsets, and I hope that you will make the effort to address these concerns and make future releases even better for all of us.

Sincerely,

A intrigued but concerned MeeGo user

Don't know what to say!

I also put my trust into Meego Handset Edition! Hopefully, that it will perform just like the UX of Tablet.
+ Look at the Tablet Meego Demo! Dump! It's so cool!
+ Look again at the Handset Meego UX, how horrible, and copy almost 90% iOS of the iphone! And the way this Meego Handset doing Multitask thing! Dump dump!

=> Let's hope again! This is just a BETA Meego Handset. I and I think almost everyone, want to have a Internet Tablet Edition running on N900. Because, N900 is also a Internet Tablet with High Resolution 800 x 480. Thought, the Screen is only 3,5 inch. But what? It has high resolution! So we all can see clearly almost everything, even it is appear to be tiny like letter, number...

+ Open GL2, 3D Accelerator, CPU 600 Mhz ~ 1,15 Ghz. Mass Storage 32GB, RAM 256 MB Plus 750 MB Virtual Memory = 1 GB. That is, I think, already enough to run Internet Tablet Meego on N900!!!

+ After this Meego Release, It gave me one thought. If Meego Lead Developer don't wanna change the UI, or put some cool Ideas into the Handset Meego, maybe no-one gonna Switch to Meego. Maemo is, surely, alot better!!!

Products good looks

i hope Product good looks, not just UI. in china good look is better important than UI for most person.

Maemo so much better?

Submitted by PintoZ on 1 July, 2010 - 23:52.

I am really disappointed with this preview...

I know that this is just a preview, and a lot of things will be done before a final release, but actually Maemo looks so much better! This Meego handset platform looks just like everything else on the market, is so far from the great Maemo platform.

Actually I do not see why the hell should a Maemo user switch to Meego.

Is there any advantage using Meego?

I would like to see how Contacts/IM are managed, the e-mails and some mutlimedia.

Also, where are the magic great desktops with widgets?

The Meego multitasking interface badly sucks compared to Maemo.

I really hope that you will "copy" more from Maemo than from Android/Iphone.

totally agree with you, I

Submitted by Mohammad Qandeel on 2 July, 2010 - 04:20.

totally agree with you, I still can't get the point behind killing nokia the the grea Maemo. Meego might take years to reach Maemo level.

meego for handsets

Submitted by james Robinson II on 1 July, 2010 - 19:50.

After seeing meego for tablets im confused to why you didnt make it the same way for handsets. Meego for handsets just looks plain watered downed from what i saw for tablets. Hopefully it looks like the tablet version meego just like what apple did with their tablet and iphone just a mirror image of an already familiar and good product..........maemo 5 was already good especially with the way it multi tasks, i was hopeing to see that added with the smoothness and pure beauty i saw of the meego demo for tablets. But i have faith in you guys to pull through and smash android and apple cause im a meego supporter

looks awfully similar to the iPhone launcher and front screen
