For assistance installing the 32-bit version of the SES driver please see the instructions below:
- Download the 32-bit version of the SES Driver.
- Open the .ZIP File file in the unzipping program of your choice. (Note: The image below is using the built-in unzipping application in Windows 7- your own unzipping program may look different).
- Once extracted you will see a WD SES Driver Setup (x86).msi file. Double click on this file to begin the setup.
- Wait while the SES Driver installer prepares the installation. This process may take several minutes depending on the speed of your computer.
- Click Next.
- Click Next again.
- Click Install to begin installing the SES driver.
- Wait while the installation runs.
- Click Finish.
- If you are prompted to reboot, restart your computer before using the external hard drive.

If you formatted your drive and erased the WD SmartWare contents or if you previously removed all content from your WD external drive and would like to restore the WD SmartWare software package please follow the instructions below:
Instructions on downloading the SmartWare Disk Image:
- Download the Windows version of the WD SmartWare Disk Image from the table above.
- After the download completes, locate the WD SmartWare Disk Image in the location you saved it.
- Open the .ZIP File file in the unzipping program of your choice. (Note: The image below is using the built-in unzipping application in Windows 7- your own unzipping program may look different).
- Copy all files and folders to your external hard drive. For assistance moving files please see Answer ID 1198: How to move or copy files from one hard drive to another in Windows.
- Double click on WD Smartware.exe.
- Click Install WD SmartWare and wait for WD SmartWare to finish installing.
- Launch WD SmartWare and select the Backup tab. Click Start Backup to begin using WD SmartWare protect your files.
If you formatted your drive and erased the WD SmartWare contents or if you previously removed all content from your WD external drive and would like to restore the WD SmartWare software package please follow the instructions below:
Instructions on downloading the SmartWare Disk Image:
- Download the Mac OSX version of the WD SmartWare Disk Image.
- After the download completes, locate the WD SmartWare Disk Image in the location you saved it.
- Mount the dmg image to the Mac desktop.
- Copy all files and folders to your external drive. For assistance moving files please see Answer ID 1199: How to move files or folders to a different hard drive on a Mac.
- Install by running WD Smartware for Mac from the external drive.
- If you receive the screen below, this means the installer was run from the .dmg and not the external drive. Cancel the installation, and run the file from your external device. If this message does not appear, continue with the installation.
- After the installation completes, start the WD SmartWare software.
- Select the Backup tab
- Click Run Backup to begin using WD SmartWare to protect your files.
