New Brew Tuesday: Hinterland Saison Farmhouse Ale

by Cornelius in Drinking, New Brew Tuesday

Type: Beer – Saison/Farmhouse Ale
Name: Hinterland Saison Farmhouse Ale
Price: $1.89
Made: Green Bay, WI
Alc/Vol: 6.3%

Saison has a golden hue with an ample two finger head. A lemon-citrus aroma fills the nose. Brewed with Belgian specialty malts and a multitude of spices. Starts with a crisp citrus flavor and leaves a spicy pepper finish.

I can fully agree with the citrus aroma and flavor that comes through with this beer. However, I don’t think we are pouring the same brew unless the people at Hinterland are some eager underage partier at their first kegger that or I’m just some secretly skilled bartender extraordinaire. What I poured only gave me a slight head that quickly dissipated leaving nothing more than a light ring around the glass. Alas, the ring did carry a nice lacing, I must give them that.

Along with the head, this brew poured a cloudy straw color. The nose had a citrus scent but also had a bit of vinegerness to it. Now my wife and I have been sick lately so our taste and nose is off but any scent of vineger is bad new for beer because it means that it has gone bad such as a bacterial infection in the yeast.

I decided to give the beer a go-ahead anyways. The beer leaves a tinge on the tongue followed by a slightly funky after taste on the back of the tongue. It had a creamyness to it but it wasn’t heavy. I really am starting to believe that I got myself a bad brew. From what I have read about this beer it comes with some decent ratings so I wouldn’t list this as characteristic of Hinterland. The only thing I can hope is that mine was just a left over brew from last year. Otherwise they may have a bad batch that slipped through the brewery.

I wont rate this beer because I don’t think it is an accurate representation of their brew, at least I hope not. Maybe we will meet again Hinterland.
