Advertising in a Music Video

Posted on August 15, 2012 by Gerhart

Product placement in music videos has been a common form of advertisement since music videos started getting made. Due to the famous musicians and lyricists that are featured in these videos they can get an incredible amount of views and can sway the opinion of the public towards a certain product. The music combined with their celebrity appeal can cause sales to boom for these products if the video is highly watched. Due to this, companies have payed big bucks to get their logos front and center in these videos.

There are many different products featured in music videos including cars, custom homes, jewelry, clothing, and even coffee. Cars, jewelry, and clothing are usually the main feature of many different rap music videos. When these rappers endorse these products the public gravitates towards them as they see one of their icons wearing it or driving it. They can cause trends in the market by just putting it in their videos. Custom homes (www.boisehunterhomes.com)ย are featured in many different music videos but they are not as blatant as other products. One might watch the video and notice the detail of the home that the video takes place in and the architecture. This may lead to them designing their own home like this. The coffee market is extremely competitive and to get the upper hand some companies have chosen to get their brand endorsed by a music idol.

Whether it is an outfit made by a certain designer or a bag of coffee beans on the counter, music videos use product placement to their advantage. This way production costs are cut and the word is spread about these products. It is definitely a different type of advertising that some might not find appealing but it can start trends at a much lower cost than it takes to air a commercial.

The term “music video” first came into popular usage in the early 1980s. Continue reading
