Breaking the Typographic Rules

Richard Hunt, Principal of Archetype
In the field of graphic design, typography is often thought of as the area that is most rules-based. And it is true that there are many rules and principles that help lead to good typography. But it is also true that adjusting, bending, skirting, breaking or ignoring many of the rules may lead to even better typography. Often rules are fashions, and while it makes sense to behave as others do, it is worth noting that just because something is in fashion, doesn't mean it's right. This talk discusses the rules, their context, and why, when it comes to typography, there is no substitute for thinking for yourself. Richard Hunt has worked in graphic design and typography for 25 years. He has worked on typeface and logo development and refined typography for companies that include the Getty Center in Los Angeles, Prada in New York, the Rhode Island School of Design, the AGO, Bruce Mau Design and other assorted design and architectural firms, manufacturers and publishers. He continues to practice and teach at OCAD University and in the York/Sheridan Bachelor of Design program.

John is Managing Director of Identica Branding & Design in Toronto, one of Canadas premier design consultancies with offices in Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, Vancouver, London and Shanghai.
