Even with its dull title, Special Forces: Team X is surprisingly fun. You wouldn't think it had any aspirations beyond stealing the Most Generic Name Ever trophy from last year's beloved Prophecy Of The Shooter Man Chronicles: Origins, but no. This generous demo may not have many brand new ideas to bring to the genre, but its fast combat and slick cover system promise much when the full game comes out in... wait, what? I haven't played much Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, but I've enjoyed what little of it I've experienced, and its online reputation seems to be solidly positive. One can only wonder what its makers will make of the server shown off in the video below, though, which has tweaked the game's gravity setting so that even knights in hundred-pound suits of armor are capable of flying hundreds of feet into the sky. What's more, the game's AI apparently interprets their sudden freedom from the fetters of gravity as a cause of impending death, meaning that...well, you just have to watch this. Read More »
It's true! It's true! System Shock 2 has finally emerged from the depths of being impossible to find legally. As reported earlier this week, the classic RPG has finally made its way to GOG. Well, things seem to have settled down a bit after hours of server downtime after the release of Diablo 3 patch 1.0.7. Folks are making their way into the Scorched Chapel to take place in Brawls, the new PvP mode in the action-RPG. Last we heard, the Kickstarter to get it made was cancelled, and GPG founder Chris Taylor was focusing on saving his company. After news of several layoffs at Valve earlier today (unusual at a private company that's swimming in cash), speculation ran wild that major change was afoot. Was Valve going to abandon its work on a Steambox or next-generation gamepad? Is the Linux gaming initiative a bust before it begins? Is Valve getting out of game development and focusing completely on Steam? Apparently it all got under Valve boss Gabe Newell's skin, because he took the "unusual step" of telling Engadget that the departure of these former employees doesn't mean Valve won't follow through on its plans. There are times when game developers release their mod tools into the wild and say "Have fun!" to all those interested in playing around with them, and then proceed to not help anyone to understand how to use them. Call me crazy, but I don't remember all that many explosions in the original Star Trek series. Games by Double Fine tend to be solid, but not great. Regardless, their charm somehow manages to win me over every time. Brutal Legend is one of my favorites, and it's finally coming over to PC, according to an announcement on Double Fine boss Tim Schafer's Twitter feed. I'm really excited to play through the hack 'n' slash/RTS hybrid again, all the while listening to Jack Black's excellent voice acting. I'm going to come out and say it. I'd be terrible at running an empire. That's evidenced by the way I manage to be consistently awful at playing Paradox Interactive's variety of strategy games. The newest in their "Making you feel bad about your organizational skills" simulators is Europa Universalis IV. This trailer shows off some of the changes to the way technology trees work. Well, this seems rather backwards. While many games are going from full-priced to free-to-play, Tribes: Ascend is going the opposite. Sort of. According to this post on the Hi-Rez forums, they're planning on implementing an option to simply buy every unlock from the start, rather then picking them up piecemeal. Not a bad plan. When Phosphor Games first announced its Project Awakened Kickstarter earlier this month, I was slightly apprehensive about their claims of endless character power customization options. But man, after watching this prototype footage, I'm beginning to believe them. This early alpha footage shows off what is apparently a small segment of the possible powers taht we'll get to toy around with. It's a good couple of weeks for sneaky guys with hoods. Last week, we found out that there would be a new Assassin's Creed game, and today we've learned that WB will be bringing a new Batman in the vein of the Arkham games, as CVG reports.
