Core Values

The Earth Medicine Alliance adopted these six core values at our first board meeting in March of 2010, and we strive to embody these ideals in our work as an organization and in our personal lives and relationships.

  • Human Rights. The Earth Medicine Alliance affirms fundamental human rights.*
  • Earth-honoring. The Earth Medicine Alliance affirms the personhood of other-than-human beings.**
  • Interfaith. The Earth Medicine Alliance affirms diverse religions, spiritual paths, and earth-honoring ways of life.
  • Personal Responsibility. The Earth Medicine Alliance affirms the importance of personal responsibility in healing our lives, our communities, and the Earth.
  • Service. The Earth Medicine Alliance encourages all human beings to embody an ethic of service and concern for the welfare of others.
  • Joy. The Earth Medicine Alliance encourages the pursuit and expression of happiness, personal fulfillment, and heartfelt joy.

*As articulated by the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and subsequent United Nations’ efforts including the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Declaration on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity

**Human beings are merely one type of person or being worthy of respect and consideration. Animals, plants, mountains, rivers, and ancestors are examples of other-than-human people who warrant our engagement and good will. We are all inter-related. See the 2006 text Animism by Graham Harvey for more information on the term animism and our way of using of the word ‘person’.
