Kevin Ngo | Tuesday January 29, 2013

Corey Shields, IT manager at Mozilla, stopped by to demo a prototype device running FirefoxOS. How to Write a Guide

Emily Dunham | Saturday January 12, 2013

1) Identify a topic about which we need a guide. If you have an idea, great! If you're looking for something to write about, check out the open issues about Guides. Ask around in the IRC channel and at meetings about what people would like to see guides on, as well.

  • Remember that you don't have to start out as an expert ... more

Reasons to come to LUG

1) We're open to all levels of experience. You don't have to know anything about Linux to come. We do a lot of things more related to open source technology than Linux.

2) Being familiar with Linux is a valuable asset when looking for a job/internship. You are more than likely going to run into a situation requiring basic Linux knowledge at some point in your career.

3) A lot of your future ... more

Beaver Bar Camp 10 attracted a good crowd away from Blocktoberfest and the Beaver game. Barcamp is ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from attendees. Mozilla signed on again to sponsor BBC. They gave workshops on web security, writing for the web, and ... more

Why SOPA Sucks: The People, The Problem, The Solution

What is SOPA?

The Wild West of the clouds, the group of rampant pirates known as the Internet, has thrown their gloves to the ground against bills proposed in the House and the Senate in an effort to preserve its very own existence. The land where people are free to share pictures of their cats and seed virtual farms is being overrun by dinosaurs. The dinosaur leading the charge is a stegosaur representing Texas that some know as ... more

Scrape the Internet! Our Python Soundcloud API

Kevin Ngo | Sunday November 06, 2011

It was a cold November evening in the bullpen at Oregon State University. uberj and ngoke were sipping tea and getting work done, when the idea of an impromptu hackthon came into our minds. At the strike of 5, we powered ourselves up into coding mode and set off to hack away at a Python Soundcloud API that would allow us to download music from the ... more

Recap: Introduction to Haskell

Kevin Ngo | Tuesday November 01, 2011

Ian Milligan, a math graduate student, gave the LUG an introduction to Haskell. Haskell is a functional programming language that is quite different from the usual imperative programming languages. We did calculated Fib numbers and generators (infinite lists on the fly) Haskell-style. It was an intense experience that left several of us dazed, but it was interesting to see something different. At the end, here was our demo ... more
