Custom Cuff Links

This was so fun to make and would be an easy Father’s Day, Birthday, or Christmas gift for dad! I found blank cuffs at Hobby Lobby for $1.99 for a pair but I bought them during a sale so mine were 50% off. There were only 1 kind of blank cuffs available, they there silver and 12 mm with a ridge to it. I had done some research prior to buying these and I found that were were some Etsy sellers who had them in bulk or pairs (ranging from $6 a pair or $30 a bulk) and some jewelry supply stores online not far off that Etsy range. I could not find any jewelry supply stores near me, and Michael’s did not carry it. (Just an FYI for you… Moving on…)

I purchased Shrinkee Dink paper at Hobby Lobby- it was cheaper than Michael’s or JoAnn’s at $4.99 a package of 8 and I used my 40% off coupon. Shrinkee Dink paper will shrink the image to a third of its size. So I knew if I had 12mm cuffs, I need x3 that size for image (at least).
At first, I attempted printing onto the shrinkee dink paper from my printer. Apparently, my printer is too fast because it smeared the ink on the paper. So I drove down to Office Depot and tried to print there. Their machine was better but still too fast. Lucky for me, they didn’t charge me since I was not satisfied with the results.

Really, the problem was the edging of the photos I was trying to do. So when I got home, I thought “hey, might as well try just cutting off the parts that bled”. So that’s what I did! But here is a picture of a couple of the pictures that DIDN’T bleed:

Once I had cut one sheet of Shrinkee Dink, I followed the package instructions which said to place on a paper bag on a cookie sheet and bake at 325* for 1-3 minutes (took mine exactly 2 minutes). Unfortunately, my paper bag was not flat so it crinkled my shrinkee dinks! (craftastrophic!)

Round two I used just my flat cookie sheet and although they came out flat, they stuck a little to the pan so I had to use a tooth pick to peel it off.

Once they’ve cooled (30 seconds or so) I used my strong adhesive to bond them to the blank cuff.

    That is a really cool idea. It is always so hard to find gifts for the men in our lives, I usually fix that by either stop giving them gifts when they turn 18 or I give shared gifts for them an their significant other. This is an idea that I can really work on expanding to other things. However, do the ink bleed after it is baked if it gets wet? My sister in law uses this for jewlery and has found that she has to seal the back of it with clear nail polish after she has baked it to prevent the drawings from bleeding off.

    I was going to buy some personalized cuff links from Etsy but now I’m definately stopping by Hobby Lobby to get blanks instead.
