We've got something new today for Mac OS X -- Frontier 7.0, bundled with our content management system Manila, as a carbonized, beautiful and reliable native Unix application.

A homecoming spacer

Frontier began its life as a Macintosh scripting system, first shipped in 1992, built around a powerful object database and multi-threaded runtime. In 1995, we turned to the Web, and found that Frontier was the perfect way to manage large dynamic sites with many authors. But it proved difficult for many Mac users, so we added an HTTP server and client and then, in 1999, developed Manila, an Internet application, included at no extra cost with Frontier. Manila brings content management to the Web browser. In the past two years, tens of thousands of people have started writing for Manila websites, and today that power is coming, for the first time, to Apple's new operating system.

Mac OS X is cool spacer

We've been running Mac servers for six years, and we've always appreciated how easy they are to maintain. With Mac OS X that ease-of-use has been combined with the power of Unix. We've barely begun to tap the power.

Features & Firsts spacer

spacer Browser-based editing and site design with Manila. Edit this Page buttons are everywhere. Templates for everything. Editorial roles. Email notification. Discussion group. Themes. Static rendering. Image management. Custody control. Link management. Syndication. Plug-in API. Scriptable via XML-RPC and SOAP. Manila separates form from content, so designers can design and writers can write. Manila makes Web editing easy and fast.

spacer This is the first time UserLand has shipped Unix software. Frontier includes a two-way bridge between the Mac and Unix worlds: you can call Frontier from the Unix command line, and you can call Unix apps from Frontier scripts. You can run Frontier and Apache on the same box. Frontier can listen on one IP address, Apache on another. That way Apache can serve static content, or run Java servlets or mod_perl or whatever, and you still have the benefit of Frontier running Manila.

XML-RPC and SOAP support are built into Frontier for Mac OS X. The current implementation has recently been extensively tested for interoperation with Microsoft, IBM, Macromedia and others, and SOAP apps running in Frontier interop with Java, Python, Perl and Microsoft .Net. Think of these protocols as Apple-Events-Over-The-Internet. The philosophy is the same because UserLand was instrumental in developing all these technologies.
